Effect of leg lift on stroke volume index in children 11-17 years old before and after induction of general anesthesia
CONCLUSIONS: 96% of normal 11-17-year-old children were fluid responsive while awake and 79% after induction of general anesthesia.PMID:34233078 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14254

Anesthetic management for robotic hysterectomy in obese women
Purpose of review Obesity is a major health epidemic, with the prevalence reaching ∼40% in the United States in recent years. It is associated with increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and gynecologic conditions requiring surgery. Those comorbidities, in addition to the physiologic changes associated with obesity, lead to increased risk of perioperative complications. The purpose of this review is to highlight the anesthetic considerations for robotic assisted hysterectomy in obese patients. Recent findings In the general gynecologic population, minima...

Anesthesia Considerations in Neurological Emergencies
This article provides a summary of the unique airway management and anesthesia considerations and controversies for neurologic emergencies in general, as well as for specific commonly encountered conditions: elevated intracranial pressure, neuromuscular respiratory failure, acute ischemic stroke, and acute cervical spinal cord injury.

Management of Acute Ischemic Stroke-Specific Focus on Anesthetic Management for Mechanical Thrombectomy.
Abstract Acute ischemic stroke is a neurological emergency with a high likelihood of morbidity, mortality, and long-term disability. Modern stroke care involves multidisciplinary management by neurologists, radiologists, neurosurgeons, and anesthesiologists. Current American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) guidelines recommend thrombolytic therapy with intravenous (IV) alteplase within the first 3-4.5 hours of initial stroke symptoms and endovascular mechanical thrombectomy within the first 16-24 hours depending on specific inclusion criteria. The anesthesia and critical care provider may b...

One EMS System Develops a Rational 911 Response
We presented the total number of calls, the number of transports, the prehospital mortality rate, the total rate of critical interventions, and the breakdown of those critical interventions for each determinant on our website: http://www.alcoems.org/mpds-categories/. The optimal presentation of this data has been driven by several iterations over the past several years.4-7 The list of time-critical interventions include those that involve cardiac arrest, advanced airway management, STEMI/Stroke/Trauma alert patients, and those with treatment of active seizures. (Table 1)

Clinical Performance Measures that Matter —Are You Ready?
Conclusion The future will belong to those who can prove value. The use of a clinical performance dashboard and comparisons to national data will help to ensure that when the payers come knocking on our doors looking for "proof" that what we do enhances patient care and improves patient outcome, we’ll have an answer! This is the first in a yearlong series of articles developed by the Academy of International Mobile Healthcare Integration (AIMHI).The AIMHI article series is developed in partnership with JEMS to help educate EMS agencies on the hallmarks and attributes of high-performance/high-value EMS system de...

Herpes Simplex Laryngitis Presenting as Airway Obstruction in a Stroke Patient
We present the second confirmed report of HSV laryngitis in an adult stroke patient, resulting in complicated airway management issues. This rare presentation of laryngeal HSV in a stroke patient can interfere with speech, language, and swallowing functions and confounds the etiology of these issues, which can impact subsequent management.
