I left my smartphone at home and can’t tell if I’m in atrial fibrillation
The enormous impact of atrial fibrillation (AF) on human suffering, health-care utilization, and physician resources is clear to the readers of HeartRhythm. Recent publications have developed 3 alarming trends: (1) the incidence of AF is increasing, perhaps fueled by the obesity epidemic; (2) our ability to treat AF is not improving, at least as assessed by age-adjusted mortality rates postdiagnosis; and (3) health-care costs for treatment of AF are growing exponentially. In reaction to these depressing facts, the tendency to want to learn more about our enemy is only natural. Improvements in bioengineering technology and ...

Factors Influencing Hospital Length of Stay After Robotic Totally Endoscopic Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting ORIGINAL ARTICLES: ADULT CARDIAC
Conclusions Multiple variables affect LOS after TECAB. Older patients, patients on hemodialysis, patients with cerebrovascular disease, and those with higher general risk scores should expect prolonged LOS. Intraoperative surgical difficulties and conversion to open coronary artery bypass grafting also lead to extended LOS. Postoperative events that are known to prolong LOS in open coronary artery bypass grafting also prolong LOS after TECAB.

Abstract 172: Patients' Experiences from Symptom Onset to Initial Treatment for Atrial Fibrillation Session Title: Poster Session I
Conclusions: Providers’ played a critical role in reducing patients' emotional distress and helping them to develop an accurate understanding of AF symptoms and treatment. This study provides new insight into participant experiences from symptom onset through initial treatment of AF which may inform development of patient centered interventions to promote early effective AF self-management.

Self-detection of atrial fibrillation in an aged population: the LietoAF Study
Conclusion Active older people are motivated and seem to learn pulse palpation. Our early experience suggests that simple nurse-based education is effective and useful in the early detection of asymptomatic AF.

Patients’ experiences from symptom onset to initial treatment for atrial fibrillation
ConclusionsProviders played a critical role in helping patients to develop an accurate understanding of atrial fibrillation, to cope with the new diagnosis, and motivated them to engage in effective self‐management. Relevance to clinical practiceInsight into participant experiences from symptom onset to initial treatment for atrial fibrillation may inform development of interventions to promote effective atrial fibrillation self‐management.

Atrial fibrillation: A moving target.
Abstract Present atrial fibrillation research focuses on three different fields of interest: Basic research to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms leading to atrial fibrillation, epidemiological studies to learn about the time course, the risk factors and the complications of atrial fibrillation, and clinical trials to further improve existing treatment strategies and develop new ones. The focus of this manuscript was the mechanisms, the epidemiology, the diagnosis and the treatment of the arrhythmia per se. Therefore, the field of prevention of stroke and systemic embolism is mostly excluded for the pur...

Are You Getting Older - Or Are You Getting Sleep Apnea?
By Brandon R. Peters, MD As my 81-year-old grandma likes to remind me on occasion, "It's hell to get old." More than a nuisance, the cumulative decline that comes with aging can significantly compromise one's quality of life and health. What if some of the problems so often associated with growing older didn't need to occur? Better yet, what if some of these physical and mental impairments could be reversed? Consider the role of sleep apnea as an unexpected contributor to many ailments erroneously attributed to aging and the reversals possible with effective treatment. Sleep Changes with Age It is clear that sleep chang...

Mid-Term Follow-up of Minimally Invasive Multivessel Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: Is the Early Learning Phase Detrimental?
Conclusions: Minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting can be safely initiated as a minimally invasive, multivessel alternative to open surgical coronary revascularization, with excellent mid-term results. Learning phase effects were not observed with regard to overall procedural safety, but rather in terms of improved freedom from conversion to sternotomy and from repeat revascularization.
