Incidence and Cost of Stroke and Hemorrhage in Patients Diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation in France
Conclusions: The incidence and cost of hospitalization for hemorrhage should be considered in the global burden of AF. These data should be useful for pharmacoeconomic evaluation of new oral anticoagulant medications. Such real-world studies may be relevant for monitoring mid- to long-term morbidity and mortality in the AF population.

Summary of evidence-based guideline update: Prevention of stroke in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: Report of the Guideline Development Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology
Objective: To update the 1998 American Academy of Neurology practice parameter on stroke prevention in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). How often do various technologies identify previously undetected NVAF? Which therapies reduce ischemic stroke risk with the least risk of hemorrhage, including intracranial hemorrhage? The complete guideline on which this summary is based is available as an online data supplement to this article. Methods: Systematic literature review; modified Delphi process recommendation formulation. Major conclusions: In patients with recent cryptogenic stroke, cardiac rhythm monitoring probabl...

Stroke Risk Factors, Subtypes, and 30-Day Case Fatality in Abuja, Nigeria (P1.121)
CONCLUSIONS: Although hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and atrial fibrillation were important stroke risk factors, in many patients, these were detected only after a stroke. While the commonest stroke subtype was cerebral infarction, observed in almost two-third of patients, SAH was associated with the highest case-fatality rate at 30 days of 44.4%. Larger population-based studies are planned.Study Supported by: nilDisclosure: Dr. Bwala has nothing to disclose.

Stroke in Patients With Aortic Stenosis: The Simvastatin and Ezetimibe in Aortic Stenosis Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In patients with aortic stenosis not prescribed oral anticoagulation, atrial fibrillation, AVR with concomitant coronary artery bypass grafting, and CHA2DS2-VASc score were the major predictors of stroke. Incident stroke was strongly associated with mortality. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00092677.

Implication of Left Ventricular Diastolic Dysfunction in Cryptogenic Ischemic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— The severe LVDD could be a predictor of stroke with AF, and its frequency was similar between CS and stroke with AF. Cardioembolism-mimic CS had significantly more severe LVDD than non–cardioembolism-mimic CS. LVDD could be helpful to discriminate the stroke mechanism in the patients with acute CS.

Association of cerebral microbleeds with mortality in stroke patients having atrial fibrillation
Conclusions: The presence and burden of CMBs were associated with increased mortality in stroke patients with NVAF. Patients with lobar CMBs were at increased risk of death due to hemorrhagic stroke. The diagnosis of CMBs is of value in predicting long-term prognosis in stroke patients with NVAF.

Antithrombotic treatment at onset of stroke with atrial fibrillation, functional outcome, and fatality: a systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionsTherapeutic International Normalized Ratio at stroke onset was associated with early and late improved survival and functional recovery suggesting sustained benefit for warfarin anticoagulation for stroke outcome in atrial fibrillation patients. Long‐term outcome data following stroke in patients taking new oral anticoagulants is required.

High Frequency of Short Paroxysms of Newly Detected Atrial Fibrillation after Stroke and TIA. Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (P1.054)
CONCLUSIONS: In the context of its currently unknown clinical and prognostic significance, the high frequency of PSAFs shorter than 30 seconds found in our study should be considered a strong enough reason for investigating its stroke risk in future studies. Blood Pressure Control and Risk of Stroke or Systemic Embolism in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation: Results From the Apixaban for Reduction in Stroke and Other Thromboembolic Events in Atrial Fibrillation (ARISTOTLE) Trial Stroke
Conclusions High BP measurement at any point during the trial was independently associated with a substantially higher risk of stroke or systemic embolism. These results strongly support efforts to treat elevated BP as an important strategy to optimally lower risk of stroke in patients with AF. Clinical Trial Registration URL: https://ClinicalTrials.gov/. Unique identifier: NCT00412984.

Women Had Worse Stroke Outcome (P1.217)
Conclusion: in our cohort women have worst post-stroke outcome, even though they have higher burden of vascular risk factors they have lower prevalence of vascular disease in other vascular beds previous to stroke. This difference persists after adjusting by age, raising the possibility of specific gender risk factors influencing on ischemic stroke outcomes.Disclosure: Dr. Zurru has nothing to disclose. Multiple Myeloma Stage I, II and Renal Insufficiency Are Associated with Increased Stroke Risk (S31.003)
Conclusion: In multiple myeloma, patient’s renal insufficiency and MM Stage I and II were independent predictors of increased stroke risk. Gender differences in the age‐stratified prevalence of risk factors in Korean ischemic stroke patients: a nationwide stroke registry‐based cross‐sectional study
ConclusionKorean women with stroke had more hypertension and hyperlipidemia after middle age, more diabetes after 65 years, and more atrial fibrillation throughout all ages. Strategies to control risk factors in women at risk for stroke are eagerly needed.
