Age and Ethnic Disparities in Incidence of Stroke Over Time: The South London Stroke Register Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Total stroke incidence decreased during the 16-year time period. However, this was not seen in younger age groups and black groups. The advances in risk factor reduction observed in white groups aged >55 years failed to be transferred to younger age groups and black groups.

Biomechanical Contributions of the Trunk and Upper Extremity in Discrete Versus Cyclic Reaching in Survivors of Stroke.
Conclusions: Survivors of stroke reached with altered kinematics when the stroke-affected side was compared with the less-affected side, yet there were few differences between discrete and cyclic reaching within the stroke-affected side. The greater trunk rotation during cyclic reaching represents a unique segmental strategy when using the stroke-affected side without consequences to end-point kinematics. These findings suggest that clinicians should consider the type of reaching required in therapeutic activities because of the continuous movement demands required with cyclic reaching. Predicting Stroke Through Genetic Risk Functions: The CHARGE Risk Score Project Clinical Sciences

High Prevalence of Atrial Fibrillation Among Patients With Ischemic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Access to nationwide register data shows that AF is more common among patients with ischemic stroke than those previously reported. Few patients with stroke and AF had anticoagulant treatment before the event, and few got it after the event. CHA2DS2-VASc could be a useful monitoring tool to intensify efforts to diagnose AF among patients with cryptogenic stroke.

Associations Between Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate and Stroke Outcomes in Diabetic Versus Nondiabetic Patients Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Decreased eGFR (<45 mL/min per 1.73 m2) is a strong predictor of all-cause mortality, stroke recurrence, and stroke disability in diabetic and nondiabetic patients with acute stroke. Increased eGFR (≥120 mL/min per 1.73 m2) is associated with all of stroke outcomes in diabetic patients and linked to all-cause mortality in nondiabetic patients.

Pathogenic Ischemic Stroke Phenotypes in the NINDS-Stroke Genetics Network Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— This study demonstrates that pathogenic subtypes can be determined with good reliability in studies that include investigators with different expertise and background, institutions with different stroke evaluation protocols and geographic location, and patient populations with different epidemiological characteristics. The discordance between phenotypic and causative stroke subtypes highlights the fact that the presence of an abnormality in a patient with stroke does not necessarily mean that it is the cause of stroke.

Acute Hospital, Community, and Indirect Costs of Stroke Associated With Atrial Fibrillation: Population-Based Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In our population study, AF-stroke was associated with substantially higher total, acute hospital, nursing home, and general practitioner costs per patient. Targeted programs to identify AF and prevent AF-stroke may have significant economic benefits, in addition to health benefits.
