Peripheral artery disease: Update on etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment
Med Clin (Barc). 2023 Jul 28:S0025-7753(23)00361-5. doi: 10.1016/j.medcli.2023.06.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPeripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition related to atherosclerosis affecting >200 million people worldwide, and it increases cardiovascular morbidity (mainly from myocardial infarction and stroke) and mortality. Indeed, PAD patients are classified as patients at very high cardiovascular risk. The most common manifestation of PAD is intermittent claudication, which is associated with reduced mobility and leg pain. Home-based rehabilitation versus hospital-based rehabilitation for stroke patients in post-acute care stage: Comparison on the quality of life
CONCLUSIONS: The home-based rehabilitation was of lower intensity and duration than the hospital-based one, but it still achieved a significant improvement in QOL for the PAC stroke patients. The hospital-based rehabilitation offered more time and treatment sessions. Therefore hospital-based patients responded with better QOL outcomes than the home-based patients.PMID:37221114 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2023.05.007

Applications for oral research in microgravity - lessons learned from burning mouth syndrome and ageing studies
J Med Life. 2023 Mar;16(3):381-386. doi: 10.25122/jml-2022-0285.ABSTRACTThe negative consequences of microgravity for the human body are central aspects of space travel that raise health problems. Altered functions of the same systems and treatment options are common points of spaceflight physiology, age-related diseases, and oral medicine. This work emphasizes the convergence of knowledge between pathophysiological changes brought on by aging, physiological reactions to microgravity exposure, and non-pharmacological and non-invasive treatment methods that can be used in spaceflight. Sarcopenia, peripheral nerves alteratio...
