Comparison of Clinical Risk Stratification for Predicting Stroke and Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— A direct comparison of 9 risk schemes reveals no profound differences in risk stratification accuracy for high-risk patients. Accurate prediction of low-risk patients is perhaps more valuable in determining those unlikely to benefit from oral anticoagulation therapy. Among our cohort, CHA2DS2-VASc performed best in this purpose.

Diabetes Mellitus, Admission Glucose, and Outcomes After Stroke Thrombolysis: A Registry and Systematic Review Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— These results confirm that AGL and history of diabetes mellitus are associated with poor clinical outcome after thrombolysis. AGL may be a surrogate marker of brain infarction severity rather than a causal factor. However, randomized controlled evidences are needed to address the significance of a tight glucose control during thrombolysis on clinical outcome.

I just got back from the North Dakota Mission: Lifeline STEMI and Acute Stroke Conference in Bismark, ND. I had a great time and I learned a lot. I often get asked to speak in various venues about acute STEMI and 12-lead ECG interpretation, but for this conference they wanted me to talk mostly about stroke. Correlation of NIH Stroke Scale Change and Vascular Risk Factors in Acute Stroke Patients (P7.164)
Conclusion:In this small sample, change in NIH stroke scale admission through discharge may be a useful quality outcome measure in acute stroke. Tobacco use was harmful in this sample. Presence of hypertension and absence of diabetes showed benefit in select acute stroke outcomes. Investigating the special cause improvements in this population may help identify ways to improve outcomes. Imaging Negative Stroke: Diagnoses and Outcomes in Intravenous Tissue Plasminogen Activator–Treated Patients
Conclusions: Because most INS patients were found to have NNCI, which may represent either transient ischemic attack or aborted stroke, and there were no intracerebral hemorrhages in the INS group, our data support the safety of administering IV t-PA to all patients in whom acute ischemic stroke is clinically suspected. We have demonstrated that NNCI patients and stroke mimics are common, and future larger scale prospective studies are required to delineate the true frequencies of each and to evaluate differences in outcomes.

Cause-specific Mortality after Stroke: Relation to Age, Sex, Stroke Severity, and Risk Factors in a 10-Year Follow-up Study
We investigated cause-specific mortality in relation to age, sex, stroke severity, and cardiovascular risk factor profile in the Copenhagen Stroke Study cohort with 10 years of follow-up. Stroke in the Young: Etiologies and Risk Factors (P7.124)
CONCLUSIONS: Stroke in the young shares many of the same common modifiable risk factors as stroke in the elderly including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and tobacco abuse. Other unique disease processes also contribute to stroke in this age group, often less modifiable.
