Cognitive Impairment in Patients With Cardiac Disease: Implications for Clinical Practice
Stroke. 2023 Jun 5. doi: 10.1161/STROKEAHA.123.040499. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCognitive impairment is common in patients with cardiovascular disease. One in 3 patients presenting at cardiology clinics have some degree of cognitive impairment, depending on the cardiac condition, comorbidities, and age. In up to half of these cases cognitive impairment may go unrecognized; however, it may affect self-management and treatment adherence. The high prevalence of cognitive impairment in patients with cardiac disease is likely due to shared risk factors, as well as direct consequences of cardiac dysfunction on the brain. Mo...

Development and validation of a prediction model to predict major adverse cardiovascular events in elderly patients undergoing noncardiac surgery: A retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: This prediction model based on the traditional method could accurately predict the risk of MACEs after noncardiac surgery in elderly patients.PMID:37315395 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2023.06.008

Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme and Hypertension: A Systemic Analysis of Various ACE Inhibitors, Their Side Effects, and Bioactive Peptides as a Putative Therapy for Hypertension
J Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone Syst. 2023 Jun 21;2023:7890188. doi: 10.1155/2023/7890188. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTHypertension is a major risk factor for heart attack, produce atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), congestive heart failure, stroke, kidney infection, blindness, end-stage renal infection, and cardiovascular diseases. Many mechanisms are involved in causing hypertension, i.e., via calcium channels, alpha and beta receptors, and the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). RAS has an important role in blood pressure control and is also involved in the metabolism of glucose, homeostasis, and balance of electroly...

Atherosclerosis on CT coronary angiography and risk of long-term cardiovascular events post liver transplantation
CONCLUSION: The standardized CAD-RADS classification on CTCA predicted the occurrence of cardiovascular outcomes following LT, with a potential to increase utilization of preventive cardiovascular therapies.PMID:37432891 | DOI:10.1097/LVT.0000000000000215

Prognostic value of Peripheral Endothelial Function on Major Cardiovascular Events above traditional risk factors
CONCLUSION: PMED predicts cardiovascular events. Non-invasive assessment of peripheral endothelial function may be useful in early detection and improving the stratification of high-risk patients for cardiovascular events.PMID:37431927 | DOI:10.1093/eurjpc/zwad225

Statins influence the relationship between ATP-binding cassette A1 membrane transporter-mediated cholesterol efflux capacity and coronary atherosclerosis in rheumatoid arthritis
CONCLUSION: In patients with RA, higher ABCA1-CEC may reflect a proatherogenic state, associated with enhanced cardiovascular risk. Statin use may unmask the protective impact of ABCA1-mediated cholesterol efflux on plaque formation, progression and cardiovascular risk.PMID:37484708 | PMC:PMC10362327 | DOI:10.1016/j.jtauto.2023.100206

Mitral Annular Calcification and Thromboembolic Risk
Conclusions: The presence of MAC is associated with greater TE risk scores and a higher risk of vascular disease. It appears that adding MAC as a vascular disease parameter to TE risk scores may have benefits for patients by improving their predictive value.PMID:37511943 | PMC:PMC10381637 | DOI:10.3390/life13071568

Sestrin2 as a Potential Target in Hypertension
Diagnostics (Basel). 2023 Jul 14;13(14):2374. doi: 10.3390/diagnostics13142374.ABSTRACTHypertension is a highly complex, intricate condition affecting millions of individuals across the globe. Nearly half of adults in the United States are diagnosed with hypertension, with incident rates projected to rise over the next decade. Hypertension is a precursor to many cardiovascular diseases including atherosclerosis, stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and peripheral artery disease. This review describes the major processes contributing to the development of hypertension and how Sestrin2 (Sesn2), an antioxidative prot...

Inflammation and immunomodulatory therapies influence the relationship between ATP-binding cassette A1 membrane transporter-mediated cholesterol efflux capacity and coronary atherosclerosis in rheumatoid arthritis
CONCLUSION: ABCA1-CEC associated with decreased atherosclerosis in patients with below-median baseline and time-averaged CRP and bDMARD use. Conversely, ABCA1-CEC associated with increased plaque in those with higher CRP, corticosteroid users, methotrexate nonusers, and bDMARD nonusers. While in well-treated and controlled disease ABCA1-CEC appears atheroprotective, in uncontrolled RA its action may be masked or fail to counteract the inflammation-driven proatherogenic state.PMID:37520890 | PMC:PMC10371792 | DOI:10.1016/j.jtauto.2023.100209

Age-Related Differences in the Contribution of Systolic Blood Pressure and Biomarkers to Cardiovascular Disease Risk Prediction: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study
Am J Cardiol. 2023 Aug 9;204:295-301. doi: 10.1016/j.amjcard.2023.07.118. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe sought to determine how biomarkers known to be associated with hypertension-induced end-organ injury complement the use of systolic blood pressure (SBP) for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk prediction at different ages. Using data from visits 2 (1990 to 1992) and 5 (2011 to 2013) of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study, 3 models were used to predict CVD (composite of coronary heart disease, stroke, and heart failure). Model A included traditional risk factors (TRFs) except SBP, model B-TRF plus SBP, a...
