De Novo Sphingolipid Biosynthesis in Atherosclerosis
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2022;1372:31-46. doi: 10.1007/978-981-19-0394-6_3.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis is the formation of fibrofatty lesions in the arterial wall, and this inflammatory state of the artery is the main cause of advanced pathological processes, including myocardial infarction and stroke. Dyslipidemic conditions with excess cholesterol accumulate within the arterial vessel wall and initiate atherogenic processes. Following vascular reaction and lipid accumulation, the vascular wall gradually thickens. Together with the occurrence of local inflammation, early atherosclerotic lesions lead to advanced pathophysiological ev...

Heart health in polycystic ovary syndrome: time to act on the data
Fertil Steril. 2022 May;117(5):885-886. doi: 10.1016/j.fertnstert.2022.03.014.ABSTRACTPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), first described over 80 years ago, is a chronic condition with gynecologic, metabolic, and psychologic manifestations. Both hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance are associated with the high prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors described in this population. Although robust data in reproductive-age women demonstrate a high rate of obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome, studies show mixed results in the adolescent and menopausal age groups. There is ...

The Effect of Diabetes and Prediabetes on the Prevalence, Complications and Mortality in Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
CONCLUSION: Given the increased risk of adverse outcomes, this study highlights the importance of regular diabetes screening in NAFLD and adoption of prompt lifestyle modifications to reduce disease progression. Facing high cardiovascular burden, prediabetic and diabetic NAFLD individuals can benefit from early cardiovascular referrals to reduce risk of CVD events and mortality.PMID:35585687 | DOI:10.3350/cmh.2022.0096

Neuropathology of Pediatric SARS-CoV-2 Infection in the Forensic Setting: Novel Application of Ex Vivo Imaging in Analysis of Brain Microvasculature
We report 8 such cases (4 infants aged 7–36 weeks, 4 children aged 5–15 years). Four underwent ex vivo magnetic resonance neuroimaging, to assist in identification of subtle lesions related to vascular compromise. All infants were found unresponsive (3 in unsafe sleeping conditions); all but 1 had recent rhinitis and/or influenza-like illness (ILI) in the family; 1 had history of sickle cell disease. Ex vivo neuroimaging in 1 case revealed white matter (WM) signal hyperintensity and diffuse exaggeration of perivascular spaces, corresponding microscopically to WM mineralization. Neurohistology in the remaining 3 infants...
