Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome mimicking herpes simplex encephalitis: A case report
Radiol Case Rep. 2022 May 8;17(7):2428-2431. doi: 10.1016/j.radcr.2022.04.019. eCollection 2022 Jul.ABSTRACTMitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome presents with the features of herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE), which is rare and has been described in only a few case reports. Our case describes a 17-year-old female with no significant previous medical history presenting with an acute onset of fever, headache, and epilepsy, similar to HSE. Computed tomography of the brain showed bilateral basal ganglia calcification. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated gyriform...

Lack of Association between Seropositivity of Vasculopathy-Related Viruses and Moyamoya Disease
CONCLUSIONS: Our cross-sectional study suggest that the investigated 11 viruses including HHV6 are unlikely to have an impact on MMD development.PMID:35500358 | DOI:10.1016/j.jstrokecerebrovasdis.2022.106509

Association of Cytomegalovirus Infection with Lenticulostriate Stroke After Mild Head Trauma in Young Children
In this study, we explored the association of a recent viral infection with the development of infantile lenticulostriate stroke with lenticulostriate calcification following mild head trauma in children. We examined the records for 49 children (<36 months old) diagnosed with infantile stroke following mild head trauma at the First Hospital of Jilin University between January 2007 and August 2019. The demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations, and laboratory and imaging results were collected and analyzed. Antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus, herpes simplex virus, and cytomegalovirus in the patient sera wer...

Intracranial Large Artery Stenosis and Past Infectious Exposures: Results From the NOMAS Cohort
CONCLUSIONS: Chronic infectious exposures, specifically herpes simplex virus 2 and cytomegalovirus were associated with asymptomatic ILAS as seen on magnetic resonance angiogram imaging. This may represent an additional target of intervention in the ongoing effort to stem the substantial global burden of strokes related to ILAS.PMID:35105181 | DOI:10.1161/STROKEAHA.121.036793

Association of acute retinal necrosis with ischemic stroke
We report the case of a 65-year-old male patient with symptoms of acute retinal necrosis at the Department of Ophthalmology, Semmelweis University. The clinical picture fulfilled the diagnostic criteria of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and after 3 days of the immediately initiated adequate therapy, contralateral hemiparesis appeared, that was confirmed as an ipsilateral stroke by imaging study. The PCR analysis of an intraocular sample confirmed the presence of VZV. Mild anti-VZV IgA positivity was observed in the cerebrospinal fluid sample. Based on the current ophthalmic disease, the associated stroke along...
