Quantitative assessment and correlation analysis of cerebral microbleed distribution and leukoaraiosis in stroke outpatients.
DISCUSSION: Cerebral microbleed incidence increased with age. Mixed CMB type displayed the highest incidence. The severity and number of CMBs at any location correlated with LA severity. These results suggested interactions between hypertension and CAA during LA progression. PMID: 25875577 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Involuntary, forced and voluntary exercises are equally capable of inducing hippocampal plasticity and the recovery of cognitive function after stroke.
CONCLUSION: Involuntary exercise induced by FES has beneficial effects on cognitive function after vascular dementia comparable to those of forced and voluntary exercise. PMID: 26179091 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Wall characteristics and mechanisms of ischaemic stroke in patients with atherosclerotic middle cerebral artery stenosis: a high-resolution MRI study.
CONCLUSIONS: PR or irregular surface plaques were associated with artery-to-artery embolism. Superior location of plaques was associated with PAI. HR-MRI provides insights into intracranial atherosclerosis in vivo, predictive of infarction patterns. PMID: 26315990 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Curcumin protects against stroke and increases levels of Notch intracellular domain.
CONCLUSION: Curcumin may protect from focal cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury as well as stimulate neurogenesis by activating the Notch signaling pathway. PMID: 27320251 [PubMed - in process]

Cerebral density and perfusion measured among heart disease patients with and without stroke.
Authors: Obara K, Meyer JS, Muramatsu K, Mortel KF Abstract This' investigation was designed to clarify the chronic effects of cardiogenic emboli on cerebral perfusion and tissue densities within remaining noninfarcted brain. Local cerebral perfusion and tissue densities were measured by xenon-contrasted CT scanning and compared by cross-sectional designs among normal volunteers without heart disease (Group C, n - 44), normal volunteers with heart disease (Group N, n =20), patients with heart disease and lacunar infarctions (Group L, n = 31) and patients with heart disease associated with cardiogenic cerebral embol...

Rosuvastatin prevents aortic arch plaque progression and improves prognosis in ischemic stroke patients.
DISCUSSION: Rosuvastatin therapy prevented aortic arch plaque progression in IS patients with CAP, and may also have long-term clinical benefits. PMID: 27915586 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impact of the PDE4D gene polymorphism and additional SNP-SNP and gene-smoking interaction on ischemic stroke risk in Chinese Han population.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results support an important association of rs966221 and rs12188950 minor allele and its interaction with increased risk of IS risk, and additional interaction between rs966221 and smoking. PMID: 28191858 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impact of CRP gene and additional gene-smoking interaction on ischemic stroke in a Chinese Han population.
CONCLUSIONS: We found that rs2794521, rs3093059, and rs1205 were associated with decreased IS risk; we also found that gene-gene interaction between rs2794521 and rs3093059, and gene-environment interaction between rs2794521 and smoking were associated with decreased IS risk. Successful aging in community seniors and stroke survivors: current and future strategies.
Authors: Kamat R, Depp CA, Jeste DV Abstract There is growing evidence to suggest that aging is accompanied by enhancement in psychosocial well-being, despite age-related declines in physical and cognitive functioning. A small but growing body of research has reported on positive trajectories of well-being, and its determinants, among community-dwelling seniors as well as in people with specific diseases such as stroke. Current strategies for promoting successful aging include physical, cognitive and social activities, healthy lifestyle, social support, and positive traits such as resilience and optimism. These str...

Therapist-assisted vision therapy improves outcome for stroke patients with homonymous hemianopia alone or combined with oculomotor dysfunction.
CONCLUSION: Therapist-assisted vision therapy increased peripheral visual awareness. Furthermore patients felt safer in the traffic and in outdoor activities. Reading speed significantly increased, and the ability to keep a moving object in focus improved. PMID: 29792389 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Hyperuricemia and prognosis of acute ischemic stroke in diabetic patients.
CONCLUSIONS: HUA independently predicted poor in-hospital outcome of AIS in diabetic patients, especially in patients aged ≤ 75 years. PMID: 30526444 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Portable fibrobronchoscopic treatment for non-severe ischemic stroke-associated pneumonia patients with dysphagia: a pilot study.
CONCLUSION: Sputum suction and alveolar lavage with portable fibrobronchoscope can significantly improve the hypoxia and pulmonary infections, reduce the inflammatory response, and thus improve the prognosis, rendering suction and alveolar lavage with portable fibrobronchoscope as a safe and effective treatment for non-severe ischemic SAP patients with dysphagia. Predictive analytics and machine learning in stroke and neurovascular medicine.
Authors: Saber H, Somai M, Rajah GB, Scalzo F, Liebeskind DS Abstract Advances in predictive analytics and machine learning supported by an ever-increasing wealth of data and processing power are transforming almost every industry. Accuracy and precision of predictive analytics have significantly increased over the past few years and are evolving at an exponential pace. There have been significant breakthroughs in using Predictive Analytics in healthcare where it is held as the foundation of precision medicine. Yet, although the research in the field is expanding with the profuse volume of papers applying machine l...
