Abstract 385: The Impact of Aspirin Primary Prevention Treatment Guidelines: Temporal Trends in Aspirin Use for Primary vs Secondary Prevention, 2005-2013 Session Title: Poster Session III
Conclusion: Secondary prevention ASA use in primary care settings remains high, but ASA use for primary prevention of cardiovascular events is low. Despite creation of national guidelines, aspirin use in the PP population is half the rate of ASA use for secondary prevention. Additional methods to safely and effectively disseminate this primary prevention aspirin use recommendation, targeting both the public and health care providers, are warranted.

Fragmentation of Care and the Use of Head Computed Tomography in Patients With Ischemic Stroke Original Articles
Conclusions— Rates of high-intensity CT use for patients with ischemic stroke reflect wide practice patterns across regions and races. Medicare expenditures parallel these disparities. Fragmentation of care is associated with high-intensity CT use.

The Effect of an EDTA-based Chelation Regimen on Patients With Diabetes Mellitus and Prior Myocardial Infarction in the Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT) Original Articles
Conclusions— Post–myocardial infarction patients with diabetes mellitus aged ≥50 demonstrated a marked reduction in cardiovascular events with EDTA chelation. These findings support efforts to replicate these findings and define the mechanisms of benefit. However, they do not constitute sufficient evidence to indicate the routine use of chelation therapy for all post–myocardial infarction patients with diabetes mellitus. Association of Body Mass Index and Mortality After Acute Ischemic Stroke Original Articles
Conclusions— Severe obesity is associated with increased poststroke mortality in middle-aged and older adults. Stroke patients with class 2 obesity had the lowest mortality risk. More research is needed to determine weight management goals among stroke survivors.

Risk of Ischemic Stroke After an Acute Myocardial Infarction in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus Original Articles
Conclusions— Ischemic stroke is a fairly common complication after an AMI in patients with diabetes mellitus, but the risk of stroke has decreased during recent years. The increased use of evidence-based therapies contributes importantly to this risk reduction, but there is still room for improvement.

Temporal Trends in Patient Characteristics and Treatment With Intravenous Thrombolysis Among Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients at Get With the Guidelines-Stroke Hospitals Original Articles
Conclusions— The frequency of IV tPA use among all AIS patients, regardless of contraindications, nearly doubled from 2003 to 2011. Treatment with tPA has expanded to include more patients with mild deficits, nonwhite race/ethnicity, and oldest old age.

Patterns of Emergency Medical Services Use and Its Association With Timely Stroke Treatment: Findings From Get With the Guidelines-Stroke Original Articles
Conclusions— Although EMS use is independently associated with more rapid evaluation and treatment of stroke, more than one third of stroke patients fail to use EMSs. Interventions aimed at increasing EMS activation should target populations at risk, particularly younger patients and those of minority race and ethnicity.

Abstract 7: Reduced Hospitalization For Transient Ischemic Attack In The United States Over The Past Decade Concurrent I Session B: Oral Abstract Presentations on Stroke Topics
CONCLUSION: TIA hospitalizations in the United States decreased from 2000 to 2010 as the number of ischemic stroke hospitalizations increased. This may be a result of increased imaging utilization and use of tissue-based diagnosis of TIA. Cases of cerebral ischemia with resolved symptoms coded as TIA in the past may be coded as ischemic stroke with MRI imaging evidence of brain injury, yet further study is needed to confirm this finding.

Conclusions: Hospitals joining the GWTG-Stroke quality improvement program between 2004-2008 achieved significantly greater improvement in stroke patient outcomes than matched hospitals not joining the program, with lower all-cause mortality at 30 days and 1 year and higher rates of discharge directly to home.

Abstract 9: The Relationship Between Patient Diversity and Warfarin Use in Atrial Fibrillation: A Ten-Year Perspective (2000-2010) on Cardiovascular Outcomes Concurrent I Session B: Oral Abstract Presentations on Stroke Topics
Conclusions: Significant differences in key metrics between race/ethnicity and gender exist. Across all metrics, Blacks had worse outcomes with less warfarin use and comparatively worse outcomes even when on warfarin. Patient diversity should be a focus for future trials in AF-related cardiovascular outcomes.
