Stroke risk and outcomes in epilepsy patients: Two retrospective cohort studies based on National Health Insurance in Taiwan
The risk of stroke in epileptic patients and the impact of epilepsy history on stroke patients ’ outcome have not been studied completely. Our purpose is to evaluate whether patients with epilepsy have increased risk of stroke or post-stroke mortality.

Baseline or 90-day fibrinogen levels and long-term outcomes after ischemic stroke or TIA: Results from the China national stroke registry Ⅲ
Elevated fibrinogen levels have been observed in patients with acute ischemic stroke, but the association of fibrinogen with stroke outcomes is still undefined. We aimed to assess the association between baseline or 90-day fibrinogen levels and long-term outcomes in patients with ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA).

Comparative mortality according to peripheral artery disease and coronary heart disease/stroke in the United States
A recent trial reported that patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) without coronary heart disease or stroke (CHD/stroke) had worse prognosis than those with CHD/stroke without PAD. However, community-based data are lacking. The purpose of this study was to compare mortality according to the status of PAD and CHD/stroke in the general population.

Risk of stroke in genetically verified familial hypercholesterolemia: A prospective matched cohort study
Individuals with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), causing severely elevated LDL-C, are expected to have a higher risk of ischemic stroke. The risk of hemorrhagic stroke and impact of statin use is however not known. We aimed to investigate the risk of incident total, ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke in individuals with FH compared to controls and to explore the association between cumulative statin use and risk of total stroke in FH.

Metabolic Determinants of White Matter Hyperintensity Burden in Patients with Ischemic Stroke
In this study, we sought to assess the association between metabolic markers of endothelial dysfunction and WMH severity in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS).

Mediterranean Diet in patients with acute ischemic stroke: relationships between Mediterranean diet score, diagnostic subtype, and stroke severity index
Adherence to a Mediterranean Diet appears to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease, as well as the risk of death due to cardiovascular disease. No study has addressed the association between diagnostic subtype of stroke and its severity and adherence to a Mediterranean Diet in subjects with acute ischemic stroke.

Toxic acrolein production due to Ca influx by the NMDA receptor during stroke
N-Methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors have a high permeability to Ca2+, contributing to neuronal cell death after stroke. We recently found that acrolein produced from polyamines is a major toxic compound during stroke. Thus, it was determined whether over-accumulation of Ca2+ increases the production of acrolein from polyamines in a photochemically-induced thrombosis mouse model of stroke and in cell culture systems.

Acute hypertensive response in ischemic stroke is associated with increased aortic stiffness
Acute hypertensive response (AHR) affects more than 60% of patients with ischemic stroke and is associated with poor outcomes. We hypothesized that its development is related to arterial stiffening. “The gold standard” estimate of arterial stiffness is carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (CF-PWV). We compared CF-PWV and indirect indices of arterial stiffness (central augmentation index(cAIxHR), central systolic(cSBP) and pulse pressures(cPP)) between acute ischemic stroke patients who developed AHR and those who were normotensive in the early phase of stroke.

Association between infectious burden, socioeconomic status, and ischemic stroke
Infectious diseases contribute to stroke risk, and are associated with socioeconomic status (SES). We tested the hypotheses that the aggregate burden of infections increases the risk of ischemic stroke (IS) and partly explains the association between low SES and ischemic stroke.

Similarities and differences between coronary heart disease and stroke in the associations with cardiovascular risk factors: The Japan collaborative cohort study
Coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke have common risk factors, but some of these differ in the magnitude or direction of associations between CHD and stroke. We assessed whether the impact of each risk factor differed between CHD and stroke mortality in Asians.

Cirrhosis patients' stroke risks and adverse outcomes: Two nationwide studies
The association between liver cirrhosis (LC) and stroke is not completely understood. Our purpose is to evaluate stroke risk and post-stroke outcomes in patients with LC.

Poor long-term outcomes in stroke patients with asymptomatic coronary artery disease in heart CT
Although stroke patients have a high risk of ischemic heart disease, little information is available on the risk of coronary events in stroke patients with asymptomatic coronary artery disease (CAD). We investigated the long-term vascular outcomes in stroke patients with asymptomatic CAD diagnosed with multi-detector coronary computed tomography (MDCT).

A hemorrhagic transformation model of mechanical stroke therapy with acute hyperglycemia in mice
Aim: Clinical benefit for mechanical thrombectomy (MT) in stroke was recently demonstrated in multiple large prospective studies. The aim of this therapy is to achieve a complete reperfusion in a short delay, given that reperfusion damage is dependent on the time of ischemia. Acute hyperglycemia is an important risk factor of poor outcome in stroke patients, including those that underwent MT. Here, we investigated the effect of acute hyperglycemia in a mouse model of ischemic stroke subjected to different times (30, 90 and 180 min) of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO).
