How demographic and clinical characteristics contribute to the recovery of post-stroke dysphagia?
According to the analysis to find out how demographic and clinical characteristics influent the dysphagia outcome after stroke, furthermore, giving some insights to clinical treatment. One hundred eighty post-stroke dysphagia (PSD) patients were enrolled in this retrospective study at the stroke rehabilitation department. The outcome measurements are beside water swallow test at discharge and length of stay at hospital. Twenty-five demographic and clinical variables were collected for this study. Logistic regression and multilinear regression were utilized to estimate models to identify the risk and protect predictors o...

Association of serum vaspin, apelin, and visfatin levels and stroke risk in a Chinese case-control study
Adipose tissue acts as an active endocrine organ secreting a number of adipokines and may be involved in biological mechanism of stroke. Vaspin, apelin, and visfatin play important roles in the regulation of vascular disorders. Our aim was to evaluate whether the concentrations of vaspin, apelin, and visfatin were associated with stroke risk. A total of 235 patients with stroke (156 patients with ischemic stroke and 79 patients with hemorrhagic stroke) and 235 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were included in this study. A sandwich ELISA was developed to measure the serum vaspin, apelin, and visfatin levels. ...

A randomized controlled trial to explore the efficacy and safety of transcranial direct current stimulation on patients with post-stroke fatigue
This study will explore about this. Method: A total of 60 patients with post-stroke fatigue were randomly divided into the control group and the treatment group with 30 patients each by minimization randomization. Both groups received basic treatment and conventional rehabilitation. In the treatment group, patients were treated with active tDCS, while in the control group, sham tDCS. Both active and sham tDCS were administered 6 times a week for 4 weeks. Before and after the trial, the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) and Modified Barthel Index (MBI) were evaluated and analyzed. And comparis...

Efficacy of sequential N-butylphthalide therapy on psychiatric and behavioral functions in acute ischemic stroke
This study examined how the sequential therapy of N-butylphthalide (NBP) could effectively improve physical movement, life activities, and psychological disorders in stroke patients. Methods: This double-blind, randomized controlled trial included middle-aged or elderly patients with acute ischemic stroke that had commenced within 48 hours before enrolment in the study. The experimental group was administered 100 mL NBP injections twice a day in the first 14 days, and a sequential 200 mg NBP soft capsule 3 times a day for the next 76 days. The control group was administered 100 mL NBP placebo injections ...

Application of transcranial direct current stimulation in cricopharyngeal dysfunction with swallowing apraxia caused by stroke: A case report
Rationale: Dysphagia is a common complication after stroke. The 2 types of dysphagia with cricopharyngeal dysfunction and swallowing apraxia after stroke are relatively rare and difficult to treat; however, there are few clinical case reports of cricopharyngeal dysfunction and swallowing apraxia after stroke. Patient concerns: A case of cricopharyngeal dysfunction and swallowing apraxia due to cerebral infarction caused by atrial fibrillation in a 63-year-old woman who was followed up for 1 year. Diagnoses: The patient was diagnosed with cricopharyngeal dysfunction and swallowing apraxia caused by strok...

The age factor influencing long-term physical functionality in stroke patients undergoing intra-arterial thrombectomy treatment
The treatment of acute ischemic stroke is heavily time-dependent, and even though, with the most efficient treatment, the long-term functional outcome is still highly variable. In this current study, the authors selected acute ischemic stroke patients who were qualified for intravenous thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator and followed by intra-arterial thrombectomy. With primary outcome defined by the functional level in a 1-year follow-up, we hypothesize that patients with older age are at a disadvantage in post-stroke recovery. However, an age-threshold should be determined to help clinicians in sel...

Aerobic exercises and cognitive function in post-stroke patients: A systematic review with meta-analysis
Conclusion: Aerobic exercise has a good impact on enhancing the cognitive dysfunction of patients after stroke, which stroke patients were found to benefit the most from moderate-intensity exercise. However, our studies did not found that aerobic exercise had an active result on cognitive flexibility, working memory, selective attention and contention resolution.

Hemispheric Activation during Planning and Execution Phases in Reaching post Stroke: A consort study
This study was to characterize the activation in the non-lesion hemisphere during movement planning and execution by localizing sources of high-density electroencephalography (EEG) signal and estimating the source strength (current density [A/m2]). Ten individuals with chronic stroke and shoulder/elbow coordination deficits and 5 healthy controls participated in the study. EEG (64 channels) was recorded from scalp electrodes while the subjects performed a reach task involving shoulder flexion and elbow extension of the affected (patients) or dominant (controls) upper extremity. Sources of the EEG were obtained and analyzed...
