Relationship between MTHFR C677T, homocysteine, and ischemic stroke in a large sample of the Han Chinese population
Ischemic stroke, one of the prevalent causes of death and disability worldwide, is linked to environmental and genetic factors, including polymorphisms in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene involved in homocysteine metabolism. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between the MTHFR C677T variant, plasma homocysteine, and risk of developing large-artery atherosclerotic ischemic stroke (LAAIS) among Han Chinese.

Effects of heavy metals in acute ischemic stroke patients: A cross-sectional study
Cerebrovascular disease is the second commonest cause of mortality globally and among the commonest causes of disability. However, research executed to probe the heavy metal exposure–stroke incidence relationship is scarce. Accordingly, we executed our study to probe the relationship of heavy metal concentrations (ie, concentrations of lead [Pb], mercury [Hg], cadmium [Cd], and arsenic) in the serum and urine of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients with several patient variables. For enrollment, we chose patients who had a first AIS within 7 days after the onset of a stroke. Thus, 33 newly diagnosed patients with AI...

Efficacy and safety of clopidogrel and/or aspirin for ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack: An overview of systematic reviews and meta-analysis
Conclusions: High-quality evidence suggested that clopidogrel plus aspirin was more efficient than monotherapy, although the risk for hemorrhagic stroke was relatively higher in combined therapy regimens lasting>1 month.

Successful endovascular therapy for an adolescent patient with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis: A case report
Rationale: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis associated with protein S deficiency is rare in adolescent patients and has high disability and fatality. Patient concerns: A 15-year-old male student presented in the hospital with sudden headache, nausea, and vomiting and was diagnosed with protein S deficiency by gene testing. Diagnoses: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis due to protein S deficiency was diagnosed in this adolescent patient, who underwent successful endovascular therapy (EVT). Interventions: The patient was treated with standard anti-coagulation therapy including low-molecular-weight heparin ...

Cystatin C predicts the risk of incident cerebrovascular disease in the elderly: A meta-analysis on survival date studies
Conclusion: Increased serum Cys C is significantly associated with future stroke events in the elderly, especially in patients with carotid atherosclerosis. Thus, serum levels of Cys C could serve as a predicted biomarker for stroke attack.

Prognostic role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and systemic immune inflammation index in acute ischemic stroke: A STROBE-compliant retrospective study
This study aims to evaluate the role of hematological inflammatory markers (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio [NLR], platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio [PLR], and systemic immune inflammation index [SII]) in predicting the neurological recovery in acute cerebrovascular events over 1-year follow-up. Adult patients diagnosed with AIS within 3 hours from January 2016 to December 2018 were recruited retrospectively. The modified Rankin Scale (mRS) was recorded upon admission to the emergency department (ED) and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after a stroke. The primary outcome measure was the neurological recovery. The neurological reco...

Determinants of life satisfaction among stroke survivors 1 year post stroke
This study recruited 376 stroke survivors (244 men and 132 women, mean age: 57 years) 1 year following stroke. Data on participants’ LS (measured using the Life Satisfaction Questionnaire [LiSat-11]), socio-demographics, and stroke-related variables were collected. Univariate analysis showed that LS and the 10 specific domains were not associated with the patients’ gender or stroke type; however, age at onset, marital status, and vocational situation were significantly associated with some domains in LiSat-11 (Spearman's rho = 0.42–0.87; all P
