A comparative study of the amount of α-synuclein in ischemic stroke and Parkinson’s disease
Abstract In the present study, we detected the level of oligomeric form of α-synuclein in the red blood cells of ischemic stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and normal people and compared the differences to assess the diagnosis potential of α-synuclein in ischemic stroke patients. 86 ischemic stroke, 100 PD, and 102 healthy cases were enrolled in the present study. Total protein amount in the red blood cells were quantified by BCA assay using spectrophotometer. Levels of oligomeric form of α-synuclein were characterized by a sandwich ELISA. Analysis of correlation analysis and receiver operating characteristic curv...

Can dietary saturated fat be beneficial in prevention of stroke risk? A meta-analysis
Abstract We conducted a meta-analysis to summarize available evidence regarding the relation between saturated fatty acid (SFA) intake and stroke risk. We searched multiple electronic databases through February 2016. Log relative risks (RRs) with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) of the highest versus the lowest for cohort studies were weighed by the inverse variance method to obtain combined RRs. 15 prospective studies including 476,569 individuals and 11,074 strokes were included. Higher SFA intake was associated with reduced overall stroke risk [RR = 0.89 (95 % CI 0.82–0.96)] and fatal stroke risk [RR = 0...

Impact of TLR5 rs5744174 on stroke risk, gene expression and on inflammatory cytokines, and lipid levels in stroke patients
Abstract Many studies reported that toll-like receptors (TLRs) played an important role in the process of ischemic stroke (IS). However, the impact of TLR5 rs5744174 on stroke risk, gene expression and on inflammatory cytokines, and lipid levels in ischemic stroke patients has not yet been reported and was therefore the subject of this study. In this case–control study, a total of 816 ischemic stroke patients and 816 healthy controls were genotyped using Sequenom MassArray technology. The mRNA expression of TLR5 was detected through quantitative real-time PCR among 52 ischemic stroke patients. The levels of IL-...

Delirium in the acute phase after stroke: comparison between methods of detection
AbstractDelirium is an acute neuropsychiatric syndrome, very common in hospitalized people with medical and neurological conditions. The identification of delirium after stroke is not an easy task and validated psychometric instruments are needed to correctly identify it. We decided to verify if (1) formal training in DSM-V criteria is needed to correctly identify post-stroke delirium, (2) if the use of a brief psychometric instrument such as 4AT improves its identification, (3) the applicability of these scales in the stroke setting. In the first phase of this study we retrospectively studied 102 acute stroke patients in ...

A high-urgency stroke code reduces in-hospital delays in acute ischemic stroke: a single-centre experience
AbstractTimely treatment is essential in acute ischemic stroke as the chances of recovery diminish over time, so efforts are necessary to streamline in-hospital pathways and reduce delays. Here, we analyse the interventions to reduce door-to-needle time in stroke patients suitable for intravenous thrombolysis at the Emergency Department of San Carlo Borromeo Hospital, Milan, Italy. All stroke patients consecutively treated with intravenous thrombolysis at our centre from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2015 were included in this analysis. The main interventions adopted were (1) continuous education of personnel, (2) recons...

Association between cardiac autonomic control and cognitive performance among patients post stroke and age-matched healthy controls —an exploratory pilot study
AbstractAssociations between autonomic nervous system health and cognitive performance have been described in different populations. Autonomic disturbances are a common phenomenon in patients post stroke. Little is known about the relationship between post stroke disturbances of the autonomic nervous system and the commonly occurring disturbances of cognitive functions revealed by victims of stroke. To assess the association between heart rate variability (HRV) and cognitive performance among patients post ischemic stroke and healthy age-matched controls, 13 patients post first-ever ischemic stroke aged 40 –80 years and...

Gender and thrombolysis therapy in acute ischemic stroke patients with incidence of obesity
ConclusionElderly obese male stroke patients with elevated diastolic blood pressure, history of peripheral vascular disease, and obese female stroke patients with a history of coronary artery disease were more likely to be excluded from rtPA.

Planning a campaign to fight stroke: an educational pilot project in La Spezia, Italy
ConclusionsOur results suggest that a personalised education can improve knowledge on stroke symptoms and signs, independently of gender and personal risk factors. The results should be verified in larger and less selection population.

Genetic variants within Ninjurin 2 gene are associated with risk of ischemic stroke in Iranian population
AbstractPrevious genetic and epidemiological studies have shown the contribution of genetic factors in conferring the risk of ischemic stroke. Among the acknowledged risk factors of stroke are the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) nearNinjurin 2 (NINJ2) gene which encodes a surface adhesion protein. In the current study, we investigated the role of two SNPs near this gene in ischemic stroke in Iranian population. The frequency of the A allele of the rs11833579 was significantly lower in cases compared with controls (OR (95% CI)  = 0.68 (0.54–0.86), adjustedP value  = 0.002). The rs11833579 was significantly ...

Aspirin or anticoagulation after cryptogenic stroke with patent foramen ovale: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
ConclusionOur meta-analysis shows that anticoagulation confers no net benefit in recurrent stroke prevention over antiplatelets in patients with PFO-related stroke. RoPE score might help in selecting patients benefiting from anticoagulation, but further trials are needed to delineate risk/benefit profile of anticoagulation.

Assessing mood and cognitive functioning in acute stroke: clinical usability of a Visual Analogue Mood Scale (VAMS)
This study thus aime d at (a) investigating the clinical usability of a Visual Analogue Mood Scale (VAMS) in acute stroke patients and (b) investigating the interplay between mood and cognition in this population.MethodsForty-one acute stroke patients were compared to 41 age-, education- and sex-matched healthy participants (HPs) on the VAMS and on cognitive measures (mental performance in acute stroke, MEPS). A control line bisection (LB) task was administered to control for potential visuo-spatial deficits in patients.ResultsPatients reported higher depression levels than HPs (lower VAMS scores); this between-group diffe...

Coexisting of aortic arch atheroma and atrial fibrillation for short-term recurrence and poor functional outcome in acute stroke
ConclusionsAortic arch atheroma concomitant with AF is not rare and appears associated with increased risks of stroke recurrence and poor functional outcome.

Effects of stroke etiology on angiographic success in patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy
ConclusionRecanalization success and clinical outcomes did not differ significantly in patients with LVAD and those with cardioembolic etiology. However, mortality rate was higher in patients with atherosclerotic etiology, due to the complexity of the procedure and the high rate of reocclusion.

Factors associated with migraine aura mimicking stroke in code stroke
ConclusionsIn code stroke, a model including age, sex, NIHSS, and fibrinogen showed a good discrimination capability to differentiate between MA and Ischemic stroke. Whether these variables can be implemented in a diagnostic rule should be tested in future studies.

A systematic review of ambulance service-based randomised controlled trials in stroke
ConclusionResearch opportunities exist across all points of contact between stroke patients and ambulance services, but randomisation and consent remain novel. Early collaboration and engagement between trialists and ambulance services will alleviate some of the complexities reported.Registration numberPROSPERO 2018CRD42018075803
