Assessment of Stroke Risk Factors in Southern Arizona (P02.054)
CONCLUSIONS: Despite a higher incidence of stroke, Hispanic concern regarding stroke risk factors is much lower than non-Hispanics. This suggests that knowledge linking risk factors for stroke and incident stroke may be lacking in Hispanic communities. Lessened concern regarding stroke risk factors may contribute to an increase incidence in stroke and to a worse outcome in this population. Hispanics increased interest in health promotion programs may afford one approach to addressing this problem. This data suggest that despite historically worse stroke outcomes, preventative efforts may be beneficial in raising stroke ris...

Acute Basilar Artery Occlusion: Safety and Efficacy of Different Treatment Strategies and Predictors of Good Outcome (P01.228)
CONCLUSIONS: In the presented study, an apparent trend for better outcome was observed in the IVT+IAT group. Presence of arterial hypertension and severe stroke were identified as independent negative predictors of good outcome.Supported by: Grants of the Internal Grant Agency of Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic number NT/11386-5/2010, NT/11046-6/2010 and NT/13498-4/2012, and by the grant project number CZ.1.05/2.1.00/01.0030.Disclosure: Dr. Herzig has received personal compensation for activities with Bayer, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Gedeon Richter. Ischemic Stroke Related to Severe Iron-Deficiency Anemia in Adults May Benefit from Blood Transfusion (P01.232)
CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence of IDA is 1-20%; it is 3.9% in our AIS population and is often related to untreated uterine bleeding. As described in the pediatric population, severe IDA may be an underlying mechanism of ischemic stroke in adults, therefore, efforts must be undertaken to identify and treat the cause of the anemia. While patients with AIS and severe IDA may receive TPA, blood transfusion may be considered as an adjuvant therapy.Supported by: SPOTRIAS P50 NS044227 & NIH Training Grant 5T 32NS0077412-12.Disclosure: Dr. Choi has nothing to disclose. Detection of Presymptomatically Latent Lesions Developing into Stroke-Like Episodes by Arterial Spin-Labeling Perfusion MRI in MELAS Patients (P03.162)
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that regional ASL hyperperfusion in the presymptomatic phase precedes the appearance of upcoming stroke-like lesions, and that presymptomatic SEs had already occurred several months before the onset of clinical symptoms. ASL imaging has great potential for detecting presymptomatic stroke-like lesions and predicting the emergence of SEs.Supported by: In part by Grants-in-Aid for the Scientific Research on Innovative Areas from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan and Young Scientists (B) from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and the Re...

Quantitative Assessment of Corticospinal Tract Injury on Diffusion Tensor Imaging Correlates with Motor Outcome after Ischemic Stroke (P03.163)
CONCLUSIONS: The degree of CST involvement by ischemic stroke on DTT strongly correlates with the degree of motor impairment at each phase of ischemic stroke. The baseline FN predicts motor outcome. DTI-derived CST assessment could become a surrogate marker of motor impairment in the design of future restorative clinical trials.Supported by: 1) NIH-NINDS Grant R01 NS70922, 2) Mort and Brigitte Harris Stroke Fund.Disclosure: Dr. Maraka has nothing to disclose.
