Teaching NeuroImages: When alopecia and disk herniations meet vascular leukoencephalopathy: CARASIL
A 26-year-old Turkish patient presented with progressive spastic gait since age 20 years and premature alopecia. Cerebral and spinal MRI revealed diffuse supra- and infratentorial leukoencephalopathy with recurrent subclinical subcortical infarcts and multiple disk herniations with cervical myelopathy (figure). Targeted panel-sequencing revealed a novel homozygous splice site mutation (c.1005+1G>T; p.?) in HTRA1, which is known to cause CARASIL (cerebral autosomal-recessive arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy),1 mostly described in Asians so far.

Neuro-Psychiatry Diseases Predisposing to Mental Status Changes in Patients with Community-Acquired Pneumonia (P1.313)
Conclusions: This study indicates that MSC is frequent in patients with CAP presenting to hospital emergency departments. The etiology of MSC is diverse, with approximately half of the cases due to neuro-psychiatric conditions. Prognostic Risk Profiles for Dementia: A Machine Learning Approach (P1.091)

Social Relationships, Serum Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, and the Risk for Stroke and Dementia: The Framingham Heart Study (P1.098)
Conclusions: In our large community sample, greater social support was associated with increased BDNF levels and, in certain dimensions of support, reduced risk of subsequent dementia and stroke. Further study of the biological and social mechanisms through which support from social networks reduce these risks is needed to determine whether relatively simple social interventions may help protect against age-related neurologic disease. Temporal and Racial Trends in Post-Stroke Dementia in the "Stroke Buckle" of the United States (P1.099)
CONCLUSIONS: Over the last decade, incidence of PSD significantly increased in South Carolina. Black stroke patients had higher overall rates of PSD than whites, but this difference was largely driven by a comparatively greater burden of Non-AD dementia. Olfactory and Gustatory Dysfunction and Subsequent Stroke Risk: A Community-Based Cohort Study (P1.107)

Association of Hemoglobin A1c and Baseline Ischemic Stroke Severity: A Population-Based Study (P1.187)
Conclusions: We found that elevated HbA1c was associated with decreased stroke severity at presentation. However, this effect is mediated by the history of DM rather than a specific dose-effect of glycemic control.
