The correlation between admission blood glucose and intravenous rt‐PA‐induced arterial recanalization in acute ischemic stroke: a multi‐centre TCD study
ConclusionHyperglycemia is associated with low rate of complete recanalization and poor clinical outcome in intravenous recombinant tissue‐plasminogen activator‐treated patients. Further studies are needed to evaluate whether lowering hyperglycemia is beneficial in the management of acute stroke patients.

Life‐threatening coronary disease is prevalent in patients with stenosing carotid artery disease
ConclusionsEndarterectomized carotid patients have a high risk of acute myocardial infarction and death, and need an intensified cardiovascular disease‐risk‐lowering treatment. Although asymptomatic, the evaluation of prognostically significant myocardial ischemia should be considered in these high‐risk patients. Eventually, a clinical trial is needed to address whether carotid patients would benefit from early intervention.

Vascular tortuosity may be related to intracranial artery atherosclerosis
ConclusionsHigh tortuosity and small diameter are related to middle cerebral artery atherosclerosis, probably by altering hemodynamics. Different degree of tortuosity may be one of the reasons for individual differences in location of cerebral atherosclerosis.

Statin therapy and the risk of intracerebral haemorrhage: a nationwide observational study
ConclusionsIn this matched case‐controlled study, statin therapy was associated with a decreased risk of incident intracerebral haemorrhage. Future studies on risk of stroke with statin therapy after intracerebral haemorrhage are needed.

Improved ischemic stroke outcome prediction using model estimation of outcome probability: The THRIVE‐c calculation
ConclusionBy computing the logistic equation with patient‐specific continuous variables in the THRIVE‐c calculation, outcomes at the individual patient level are more accurately estimated. Given the widespread availability of computers and devices at the point of care, such calculations can be easily performed with a simple user interface.

Risk factors for ischemic stroke and its subtypes in Chinese vs. Caucasians: Systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionOur study showed a lower prevalence of atrial fibrillation, ischemic heart disease and hypercholesterolemia in Chinese, and mostly similar risk factor associations in Chinese and Caucasian ischemic stroke patients. Further analyses of individual patient data to allow adjustment for confounders are needed to confirm and extend these findings.

Stroke in Bahrain: rising incidence, multiple risk factors, and suboptimal care
The incidence of stroke in Bahrain is rising in the Bahraini population and has nearly doubled over the last 16 years, while the incidence in the non‐Bahraini population has not changed. Incidence of stroke in the Bahraini population (110/100 000) is now much greater than in the non‐Bahraini population (27/100 000). The Bahraini stroke population is 10 years younger than Western comparators with a much higher prevalence of many of the risk factors for stroke, including diabetes (54%), hypertension (75%) and hyperlipidemia (34%). The combination of an ageing Bahraini population alongside a high prevalence of risk fa...

Protocol for Cilostazol Stroke Prevention Study for Antiplatelet Combination (CSPS.com): a randomized, open‐label, parallel‐group trial
DiscussionThe CSPS.com is expected to provide evidence indicating whether secondary IS prevention in high‐risk patients can be improved by using DAPT involving cilostazol.

Anemia on admission predicts short‐ and long‐term outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke
ConclusionAnemia is common among AIS patients and is associated with cardiovascular comorbidities. Low hemoglobin status independently predicts short and long‐term mortality.

Stroke in Asia: a global disaster
Although stroke is a world‐wide problem, the burden of stroke is particularly serious in Asia; its mortality is higher than in Europe or North America. The situation in Asia is dichotomized. Stroke mortality and case fatality has been declining in northern‐eastern countries such as Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and urbanized areas of China. This is attributed to both the risk factor control and stroke care improvement. However, declining stroke incidence is rarely observed, which is in part due to rapidly aging population. As a result, there is an increase in the number of stroke survivors who require long‐term, costly care....

Acute diffusion‐weighted imaging lesion patterns predict progressive small subcortical infarct in the perforator territory of the middle cerebral artery
ConclusionspSSSI pattern was closely related to END in acute SSSI caused by large‐artery atherosclerosis and small‐artery disease in the perforator territory of the MCA.

Burden of stroke in Puerto Rico
Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and the first cause of long‐term disability in Puerto Rico. Trained staff reviewed and independently validated the medical records of patients who had been hospitalized with possible stroke at any of the 20 largest hospitals located in Puerto Rico during 2007, 2009, and 2011. The mean age of the 5005 newly diagnosed stroke patients (51·2% female) was 70 years. At the time of hospitalization, women were 4½ years older, were less likely to be married (60·2% vs. 39·9%, P < 0·001), smoked less (5·8% vs. 13·4%, P < 0·001), and had significantly higher proportion...

The real stroke burden in the Philippines
Stroke is the Philippines' second leading cause of death. It has a prevalence of 0·9%; ischemic stroke comprises 70% while hemorrhagic stroke comprises 30%. Age‐adjusted hypertension prevalence is 20·6%, diabetes 6·0%, dyslipidemia 72·0%, smoking 31%, and obesity 4·9%. The neurologist‐to‐patient ratio is 1:330·000, with 67% of neurologists practicing in urban centers. Health care is largely private and the cost is borne out‐of‐pocket by patients and their families. Challenges include delivering adequate support to the rural communities and to the underprivileged sectors.
