Genetic study of Lewy body dementia supports ties to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) In a study led by National Institutes of Health (NIH) researchers, scientists found that five genes may play a critical role in determining whether a person will suffer from Lewy body dementia, a devastating disorder that riddles the brain with clumps of abnormal protein deposits called Lewy bodies. The results also supported the disorder's ties to Parkinson's and Alzheimer diseases.

NIH researchers link cases of ALS and FTD to a Huntington's disease-associated mutation
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) A study led by researchers at the National Institutes of Health has made a surprising connection between frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), two disorders of the nervous system, and the genetic mutation normally understood to cause Huntington's disease. This large, international project, which included a collaboration between the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA), opens a potentially new avenue for diagnosing and treating some individuals with FTD or ALS.

Antioxidant treatment in acute ischemic stroke may delay the onset of Alzheimer's dementia
(Bentham Science Publishers) There is a considerable overlap between vascular risk factors and risk factors of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In addition, incident stroke approximately doubles the risk of developing AD. Oxidative stress is significantly involved in the pathogenesis of AD and suffers a dramatic increase in the setting of acute ischemic stroke, especially in cardioembolic stroke, followed by lacunar stroke. Dampening this oxidative burst could delay the onset of subsequent dementia in stroke survivors.

Statin use reduces mortality and stroke risk in dementia patients, new study shows
(Spink Health) The study, which analyzed 44,920 Swedish dementia patients from the Swedish Dementia Registry between 2008-2015, found users of statins had a 22% lower risk of all-cause death compared to matched non-users. The research also demonstrated that statin users had a 23% reduction in the risk of stroke, which is three times more likely in patients with mild dementia and seven times more likely in those with severe dementia.

(Gero) The study published today in Communications Biology used clinical and genomic data of 300,477 British individuals from UK Biobank to show that the most prevalent chronic conditions such as cancer, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, dementia, and some others share the common underlying mechanism, that is aging itself, and discover genetic factors associated with healthspan, also known as healthy life expectancy.

Correlation of stroke and dementia with death: A study from the Swedish dementia registry
(Bentham Science Publishers) Patients who died of IS the most common type of dementia was vascular dementia while those died from other causes were most often diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia (AD). Patients who died from IS and were registered in Riksstroke had higher MMSE score compared to other groups. Patients who died from IS took more cardiovascular medications. There were no differences in the use of antipsychotics, antidepressants, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, memantine, anxiolytics, or hypnotics between the groups.

Stroke doubles dementia risk, concludes large-scale study
(University of Exeter) The study analyzed data on stroke and dementia risk from 3.2 million people across the world. The link between stroke and dementia persisted even after taking into account other dementia risk factors such as blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Their findings give the strongest evidence to date that having a stroke significantly increases the risk of dementia.
