Long-term evaluation of dabigatran 150 vs. 110 mg twice a day in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation
Conclusion Annualized rates of all outcomes were constant with better efficacy of D150, less major bleeding with D110, and low intracerebral haemorrhage rates for both doses. There were no additional safety concerns. This is the longest continuous randomized experience of a novel anticoagulant.

Cost effectiveness of left atrial appendage closure with the Watchman device for atrial fibrillation patients with absolute contraindications to warfarin
Conclusions This analysis demonstrates that LAAC with the Watchman device is a cost-effective and cost-saving solution for stroke risk reduction in patients with non-valvular AF who are at risk for stroke but have contraindications to warfarin.

Effects of right ventricular pacing sites on blood pressure variation in upright posture: a comparison of septal vs. apical pacing sites
Conclusion During VVI pacing, RV septal pacing exhibited lesser BP variation during upright posture compared with RV apical pacing.

Bifocal left ventricular stimulation or the optimal left ventricular stimulation site in cardiac resynchronization therapy: a pressure-volume loop study
Conclusion Stimulation at the optimal LV site showed a significantly higher pump function improvement compared with bifocal LV stimulation. Mechanical activation at the optimal LV site was significantly more delayed compared with the non-optimal LV site. In general, these results suggest that implantation of a second LV lead yields no additional benefit over implantation of one optimally placed LV lead. However, a bifocal approach might be beneficial in the individual patient.

Wound haematoma following defibrillator implantation: incidence and predictors in the Shockless Implant Evaluation (SIMPLE) trial
ConclusionPocket haematoma remains an important complication of ICD implantation and is associated with a high risk of infection. Independent predictors of pocket haematoma include heparin bridging, prior stroke, sub-pectoral placement of ICD, older age, and upgrade from a pacemaker.

Role of insertable cardiac monitors in anticoagulation therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation at high risk of bleeding
Conclusion In AF patients with high bleeding risk, ICM-guided rhythm control with AADs and assessment of AF burden may allow safe discontinuation of OACs.

Clinical features and changes in epidemiology of infective endocarditis on pacemaker devices over a 27-year period (1987-2013)
Conclusion Infective endocarditis on pacemaker devices has shown an increasing incidence during the past decades, representing almost 10% of all IE in the last 6 years. This is a severe disease, with a high rate of severe complications and requiring removal of device in most cases. In spite of therapy, early mortality is high.

Self-reported physical activity and major adverse events in patients with atrial fibrillation: a report from the EURObservational Research Programme Pilot Survey on Atrial Fibrillation (EORP-AF) General Registry
Conclusion</div>Atrial fibrillation patients taking regular exercise were associated with a lower risk of all-cause death, even when we considered various subgroups, including gender, elderly age, symptomatic status, and stroke risk class. Efforts to increase physical activity among AF patients may improve outcomes in these patients.</span>

'Real-world management and outcomes of patients with paroxysmal vs. non-paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in Europe: the EURObservational Research Programme-Atrial Fibrillation (EORP-AF) General Pilot Registry
Conclusion In this ‘real-world’ contemporary observational registry, patients with non-paroxysmal AF had a worse outcome, in terms of all-cause mortality, which was related to a more severe clinical profile. The risk of stroke at 1 year was relatively low, perhaps reflecting the high rates of anticoagulation use in this cohort.

Ischaemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation with chronic kidney disease undergoing peritoneal dialysis
Conclusion In CKD patients on PD with AF, who had similar ischaemic stroke risk as non-CKD counterparts, warfarin therapy is associated with reduction in risk of ischaemic stroke without a higher risk of ICH.

Catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation in patients with heart failure: impact of maintaining sinus rhythm on heart failure status and long-term rates of stroke and death
Conclusion Long-term success rates for persistent (but not paroxysmal) AF ablation are significantly lower in HF patients. Left ventricular function and HF symptoms were improved following ablation. In HF patients, recurrent arrhythmia strongly predicted stroke and death during follow-up.

Interrelationship between electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy, QT prolongation, and ischaemic stroke: the REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke Study
Conclusion The combination of ECG-LVH and prolonged QT is associated with a higher risk of ischaemic stroke compared with either condition in isolation, and the stroke risk for each condition does not depend on the presence of the other.

The impact of ischaemic stroke on atrial fibrillation-related healthcare cost: a systematic review
AbstractThe aim of this study was to summarize healthcare costs incurred by patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who developed ischaemic stroke, explore factors associated with increased cost, and highlight the importance of anticoagulation therapy for stroke prophylaxis. A systematic literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the health economic evaluation database was conducted up to December 2015. Studies focused on the cost and/or resource utilization of ischaemic stroke in patients with AF were included. Reported costs were converted to international dollars (I$) and adjusted to 2015 values. Alongside ...
