Impact of shoulder subluxation on peripheral nerve conduction and function of hemiplegic upper extremity in stroke patients: A retrospective, matched-pair study.
Conclusions: Stroke may lead to extensive abnormal nerve conduction on the HUE, and SS may aggravate the abnormality, which may disturb the recovery of upper limb function. PMID: 33402052 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Tirofiban combined with heparin's effect and safety in the treatment of mild to moderate acute ischemic stroke.
Authors: Qiu T, Li C, Huang L, Xiao H, Deng X, Dai X, Fu S, Wang J, Gong Q, Luo Q, Wang M, He W, Chen M Abstract Tirofiban can be used to treat patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tirofiban combined with heparin in the treatment of mild to moderate AIS. A total of 98 patients with mild to moderate AIS randomly were divided into 2 groups within 48 h: the treatment group treated with tirofiban and, and the control group treated with aspirin + clopidogrel. The treatment group was given the same scheme as the control group after the treatment of tirofiban co...

Evaluating the effect of transplanting umbilical cord matrix stem cells on ischemic tolerance in an animal model of stroke.
CONCLUSION: The pretreatment of the transplanted umbilical cord stem cells in the striatum of ischemic rats possibly leads to restorative events, exerting a decreasing effect on cell death. Subsequently, these events may improve the motor ability and reduce ischemic injuries. PMID: 33167823 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Screening for cognitive impairment with the montreal cognitive assessment at six months after stroke and transient ischemic attack.
CONCLUSION: The MoCA-Beijing cutoff score for differentiating CI from NCI after stroke and TIA at six months was at 24/25, and it is important for routine clinical practice. PMID: 32967577 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Predictors, causes and outcome of 30-day readmission among acute ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Older age, stroke severity, prior stroke, diabetes, indwelling urinary catheter and admission to non-neurology floor during index admission were associated with 30-day readmission. 30-readmission after AIS increased hospitalization expenses, LOS and in-hospital mortality. Relationship between methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene (A1298C) polymorphism with the risk of stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Authors: Kumar A, Sharma R, Misra S, Nath M, Kumar P Abstract Studies on relationship between methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR) gene A1298C polymorphism with the risk of ischemic as well as hemorrhagic stroke have shown discordant results. Present meta-analysis was aimed to clarify the relationship between MTHFR gene A1298C polymorphism with risk of stroke. A comprehensive literature search for all published articles was performed in electronic database including PubMed, EMbase, Cochrane Library, Trip Databases, Worldwide Science, CINAHL, and Google Scholar up to 31st  December 2019. Pooled odds r...

Relationship between ischemic stroke locations, etiology subtypes, neurological outcomes, and autonomic cardiac function.
CONCLUSIONS: HRV measured after admission is related to the AIS infarction basin, TOAST subtypes, and neurological outcomes at discharge suggesting a possible role for HRV in evaluating AIS and identifying high-risk patients. PMID: 32701421 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Neurological complications of COVID-19: a systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: Considering the possibility of neurological involvement in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection can result in earlier diagnosis and treatment; otherwise permanent, irreversible sequelae and even death may follow. More comprehensive studies may indicate that until the end of the present pandemic, young adults with unexplained and unexpected stroke as well as patients with newly diagnosed Guillain-Barré syndrome should be tested for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Changes in white matter microstructure related to non-linguistic cognitive impairment in post-stroke aphasia.
CONCLUSION: Patients with PSA have non-linguistic cognitive impairment. The integrity of the white matter microstructures can be extensively damaged. Impaired SP and MP in patients with PSA are related to UF damage. PMID: 32697169 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

AST to ALT ratio and risk of hemorrhagic transformation in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Higher AAR was associated with an increased risk of HT after ischemic stroke. In addition, AAR might be a better biomarker for predicting HT than ALT or AST. PMID: 32697140 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effect of renal function on association between uric acid and prognosis in acute ischemic stroke patients with elevated systolic blood pressure.
CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that high serum uric acid concentration is associated with better prognosis in ischemic stroke patients with normal renal function, but not in those with abnormal renal function. The establishment of causality between increased uric acid levels and better stroke prognosis needs more suitably designed randomized clinical trials. Schisandrin B improves cerebral ischemia and reduces reperfusion injury in rats through TLR4/NF- κB signaling pathway inhibition.
Schisandrin B improves cerebral ischemia and reduces reperfusion injury in rats through TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway inhibition. Neurol Res. 2020 Jul 13;:1-10 Authors: Fan X, Elkin K, Shi Y, Zhang Z, Cheng Y, Gu J, Liang J, Wang C, Ji X Abstract It has been established that poor outcomes in ischemic stroke patients are associated with the post-reperfusion inflammatory response and up-regulation of TLR4. Therefore, suppression of the TLR4 signaling pathway constitutes a potential neuroprotective therapeutic strategy. Schisandrin B, a compound extracted from Schisandra chinensis, has been shown to posse...

Late changes in blood-brain barrier permeability in a rat tMCAO model of stroke detected by gadolinium-enhanced MRI.
DISCUSSION: Our results indicate a significant late opening of the BBB. This is important as the majority of previous studies have only characterised an early acute BBB permeability in ischemia. However, the later period of increased permeability may indicate an optimal time for drug delivery across the BBB, when it is especially suited to drugs targeting delayed processes.
