Abstract 149: Effects of Ethnicity and Prior Depression on Hospital Course and Outcomes in First-Time Stroke Patients Session Title: Abstract Poster Session I and Reception
Conclusions: There was a combined effect of ethnicity and depression on LOS where non-Hispanic patients with depression had a shorter LOS than other groups. Although not statistically significant, the findings may be clinically important. It is critical to determine whether these patients had less severe strokes or fewer comorbidities, or if patients were discharged too quickly.

Abstract 154: Estimating Treatment Effects in More Than Two Treatment Groups via Propensity Score Weighting: Practical Guidance and Application from Anticoagulant Therapy in Atrial Fibrillation Study Session Title: Abstract Poster Session I and Reception
Conclusions: Our results showed IPTW methods, correctly employed under certain assumptions, are practical and relatively simple tools to control for selection bias and other baseline differences in observational studies evaluating the comparative treatment effects of more than two treatment arms. When preserving sample size is important and in the presence of time-varying confounders, IPTW methods have distinct advantages over propensity matching or adjustment.

Abstract 160: Health-related Quality of Life (HRQoL) Associated with Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and Comorbidities in Patients with Diabetes Session Title: Abstract Poster Session I and Reception
Conclusions: The results provided may be useful to estimate the impact of diabetes-related and CVD comorbid conditions on utility for public health and cost-effectiveness analyses. Limitations: Estimates reflect annual or chronic impacts because survey timing limited the ability to estimate acute effects. This research was unable to differentiate between type 1 and type 2 DM.

Abstract 201: Are Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Willing to Consider New Strategies to Prevent Stroke? A Qualitative Analysis of Community-Based Focus Groups Session Title: Abstract Poster Session II
Conclusion: Focus group participants expressed a fear of debilitating stroke, with varying levels of acceptance of inconveniences and potential bleeding associated with blood thinners. Among a subset of participants, there was willingness to consider new stroke prevention therapies; however, this was preferred with a known, trusted physician. Subspecialized clinicians offering new therapies may be challenged to establish perceived mutual respect with patients, traditionally built over time, and this may be required for patients to consider new therapies. Future research is needed to determine best practices for both establ...

Abstract 202: Predictors of Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy in Intracerebral Hemorrhage Session Title: Abstract Poster Session II
Conclusions: We identified several independent early predictors of PEG placement in ICH. Early identification of ICH patients who will require PEG placement could result in reduced resource utilization, quicker initiation of rehabilitation, shorter hospital length of stay, and reduction of preventable complications. Prospective studies are required to determine optimal patient selection and timing for PEG placement.

Abstract 203: Preventing Stroke in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation: A Review of Published Interventions to Aid Patient Decision Making Session Title: Abstract Poster Session II
Conclusion: Interventions designed to aid patient decision making around stroke prevention in AF improved a selection of patient-centered outcomes. Given the availability of multiple NOACs and an implantable device for stroke prevention in AF, there is a need to develop and evaluate new patient decision support tools.

Abstract 204: Echocardiographic Evidence for Systemic Atherosclerosis, Atrial Fibrillation, and Long-Term Prognosis in Stroke Patients Session Title: Abstract Poster Session II
Conclusion: In patients with non-hemorrhagic stroke, cardiac and systemic evidence of atherosclerosis was strongly associated with atrial fibrillation and portended poor long-term prognosis. In stroke patients with cardiac and systemic evidence of atherosclerosis and rhythms other than atrial fibrillation, extended ECG monitoring may be warranted.

Abstract 206: Impact of Inpatient Evaluation of Health Literacy on Outcomes in Post-MI Patients Session Title: Abstract Poster Session II
Conclusion: Routine hospital health literacy screening did not improve risk of MACE. Selective health literacy screening was associated with lower 1-year readmission risk compared with hospitals that never screened. Studies are needed to elicit how inpatient health literacy screening can improve patient transition of care.

Abstract 240: Regional Variation in 30-Day Ischemic Stroke Mortality and Readmissions in Get With the Guidelines-Stroke Hospitals Session Title: Abstract Poster Session II
Conclusions: HRR-level 30-day ischemic stroke mortality and readmission rates exhibit substantial regional variation and are inversely correlated. Further research is ongoing to determine the origin of the regional variation and correlation between 30-day event rates.

Abstract 244: Sex-based Differences in Economic and Health-related Burden of Depression on Adults With Cardiovascular Disease Session Title: Abstract Poster Session II
Conclusion: CVD patients, especially women, were more likely to have depression, and had considerable higher medical expenditures. The results reinforce the paramount importance of assessing and managing depression among those with CVD to favorably impact healthcare costs.

Abstract 251: The Association Between Receipt of Healthcare Services and Post-stroke Hypertension Control Session Title: Abstract Poster Session II
We examined the receipt of health care services by patients in the one-year period following discharge for ischemic stroke. This was a retrospective cohort study of patients who were admitted for acute ischemic stroke at a Veterans Affairs hospital during year 2011 and who were discharged with a BP >140/90 mmHg. The following were reviewed: primary care visits; sub-specialty clinic visits; emergency department (ED) visits; hospitalizations; utilization of ancillary care (i.e., telehealth, pharmacy, nutrition services); medications upon discharge; adherence to medications and occurrence of recurrent stroke during the one-...

Abstract 253: The Association of Socioeconomic Status With Elevation of N-terminal Pro-b-type Natriuretic Peptide Session Title: Abstract Poster Session II
Conclusions: Low SES (particularly low income) was associated with elevated level of NT-pro-BNP. Targeting low SES individuals might be helpful in early identification of high risk population for cardiac overload.
