Anxiety and Depression Associated With Caregiver Burden in Caregivers of Stroke Survivors With Spasticity
Abstract: Objective: To investigate the relationship between anxiety/depression and caregiver burden in informal caregivers of stroke survivors with spasticity.Design: Data were collected via online surveys from informal caregivers 18 years or older who cared for stroke survivors.Setting: Internet-based survey.Participants: 2007 through 2009 U.S. National Health and Wellness Survey database or Lightspeed Research general panel respondents (N=153).Interventions: Not applicable.Main Outcome Measures: Anxiety and depression were self-reported by the caregiver as a physician diagnosis. Depression severity was measured by the P...

Measurement Characteristics and Clinical Utility of the Stroke Rehabilitation Assessment of Movement Among Stoke Patients
The Stroke Rehabilitation Assessment of Movement (STREAM) is an outcome measure that examines voluntary limb movement of the arm and leg and basic mobility after stroke. The 2 limb subscales are scored on a 3-point ordinal scale. Scoring considers the excursion and quality of limb movement compared with the less impaired side. The mobility subscale is scored on a 4-point ordinal considering the quality of movement, whole versus part completion of the task, use of a device, and assistance required. A total of 20 points is available for each limb scale, and 30 points are available for the mobility scale. Scores are converted...

Impact of Time on Quality of Motor Control of the Paretic Upper Limb After Stroke
Abstract: Objective: To establish the time course of recovery regarding smoothness of upper limb movements in the first 6 months poststroke.Design: Cohort study with 3-dimensional kinematic measurements in weeks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 12, and 26 poststroke.Setting: Onsite 3-dimensional kinematic measurements in stroke units, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, and patients' homes.Participants: Patients (N=44; 19 women, 25 men; mean age ± SD, 58±12y) with a first-ever unilateral ischemic stroke and incomplete upper limb paresis (27 left sided, 17 right sided) were included.Interventions: Not applicable.Main Outcome Measures...

Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study of the Response to Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy of Children With Hemiparetic Cerebral Palsy and Adults With Chronic Stroke
Conclusions: Participants who had reduced integrity, displacement, or interruption of their CST performed worse on pretreatment motor testing. However, this had no effect on their ability to benefit from CI therapy. The results for children and adults are consistent with one another.

Effect of Chemodenervation of the Rectus Femoris Muscle in Adults With a Stiff Knee Gait Due to Spastic Paresis: A Systematic Review With a Meta-Analysis in Patients With Stroke
Conclusions: According to this review, chemodenervation of the rectus femoris shows a significant improvement in peak knee flexion during swing. The effect on functional outcomes and energy cost is still unclear.

Interdisciplinary Cardiovascular and Neurologic Outpatient Rehabilitation in Patients Surviving Transient Ischemic Attack or Stroke With Minor or No Residual Deficits
Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation program combining secondary prevention and neurorehabilitation to improve vascular risk factors, neurologic functions, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients surviving a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke with minor or no residual deficits.Design: Prospective interventional single-center cohort study.Setting: University hospital.Participants: Consecutive consenting patients having sustained a TIA or stroke with 1 or more vascular risk factors (N=105) were included.Interventions: Three-month...

Factors influencing prognosis and functional outcome one year after a first-time stroke in a Caribbean Population
To evaluate functional outcome and quality of life one year post stroke in a Caribbean population. Caribbean stroke patients are younger than those in North American/European countries. Therefore, their functional outcome cannot be predicted on the basis of studies on other populations.

Does the frequency of participation change after stroke and is this change associated with the subjective experience of participation?
To investigate changes in the frequency of participation six months post stroke compared to the prestroke situation and establish whether such a change is associated with participation restrictions and satisfaction with participation six months post stroke.

Decreased diaphragm excursion in stroke patients with dysphagia as assessed by M- mode sonography
To record diaphragm excursion via M-mode ultrasonography in stroke patients with dysphagia (group A) and determine whether they present reduced diaphragm excursion during voluntary coughing compared with stroke patients without dysphagia (group B) and healthy subjects (group C).

Decreased Tidal Volume May Limit Cardiopulmonary Performance During Peak Exercise in Subacute Stroke
Reduced pulmonary function may be an underlying cause of post-stroke fatigue during physical activities. The aim of this study is to determine whether pulmonary function is reduced at peak exercise in subacute stroke compared to sedentary adults.
