The frequency of alcohol consumption is associated with the stroke mortality
ConclusionsThis study shows a strong association between the frequency of alcohol consumption and stroke mortality, independent of total amount of alcohol consumption. The risk of stroke death was the highest among men who consumed alcohol >2.5 times per week.

Mild stroke: safety and outcome in patients receiving thrombolysis
ConclusionsThis study highlights the efficacy of rt‐PA in patients with acute cerebral ischemia presenting with mild symptoms and confirms the low‐risk profile of this treatment.

Diffusion‐weighted lesions in acute ischaemic stroke patients with migraine
ConclusionsMigraine was associated with small cortical infarctions. This association may be due to cortical spreading depression.

Neurological disorders in the Global Burden of Disease 2010 study
ConclusionsNeurological disorders are of great public health importance. This knowledge is useful in dimensioning and organizing healthcare systems and necessary when planning education of health personnel on all levels.

Routine serum C‐reactive protein and stroke outcome after intravenous thrombolysis
ConclusionsAccording to our findings, elevated routine serum CRP measured within 24 h after admission does not seem to independently affect the outcome in patients receiving intravenous thrombolysis for stroke. However, further studies of blood samples taken directly before the treatment are needed.

Is smoking associated with favourable outcome in tPA‐treated stroke patients?
ConclusionOur study showed an association between current smoking and favourable short‐term outcome in stroke patients treated with tPA, but not in acute stroke patients not treated with tPA. This may indicate a more effective thrombolysis with tPA in smokers.

Association between neurological disorders, functioning, and mortality in the elderly
ConclusionsWe found that not only specific neurological disorders, but also earlier symptoms are related to impaired functioning and predict mortality in the elderly. These findings have potential clinical relevance for screening and early detection of individuals at risk.

Association of uric acid and carotid artery disease in patients with ischemic stroke
ConclusionOur study demonstrated that higher uric acid level is strongly associated with CAD. Elevated uric acid might be injurious for large cerebral arteries with some probable confounding risk factors. Further prospective large clinical trials will determine whether lowering uric acid level reduces the frequency of CAD and ischemic stroke.

Documentation of atrial fibrillation prior to first‐ever ischemic stroke
ConclusionComprehensive approach for AF screening allows detecting AF in one‐third of patients admitted with first‐ever ischemic stroke. Patients with high cardiovascular risk are more likely to have non‐permanent AF.

Organizational changes aiming to reduce iv tPA door‐to‐needle time
ConclusionsStreamlining of iv tPA logistics can reduce median DNT to <30 min in a general local hospital. Moving treatment start from the ER to the CT laboratory contributed to reduce DNT. Our organizational model was resistant to influence on DNT by patient age, gender, stroke severity, and time to hospital arrival. The incidence of SICH remained low.

Ischemic stroke in patients older and younger than 80 years
ConclusionAvoiding neurological worsening may have a large potential for reducing the difference in short‐term outcome between old and young stroke patients by preventing treatable complications including pneumonia. Risk factor burden is important for long‐term survival in both stroke patients ≥80 years and <80 years.

Functioning of long‐term survivors of first‐ever intracerebral hemorrhage
ConclusionsA large proportion of long‐term survivors of ICH in Southern Norway live functionally independent lives in their private homes. Dependency is linked to leukoaraiosis and female sex. Cognitive impairment is common and linked to lobar location of ICH.

Body temperature and major neurological improvement in tPA‐treated stroke patients
ConclusionHigher body temperature was independently associated with MNI in severe ischaemic stroke patients treated with tPA. This may suggest a beneficial effect of higher body temperature on clot lysis and recanalization.

CRP gene polymorphism predicts post‐stroke functional outcome in Han Chinese
ConclusionsOur study indicates that SNP rs1130864 in the CRP gene is an independent predictor of 3‐month functional outcome in patients with first‐onset IS in a Han Chinese population. Further studies in different ethnic groups are needed to validate our findings.
