Apolipoprotein E polymorphism in aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage in West Sweden
ConclusionsThe APOEε4 polymorphism has no major influence on risk of aSAH, the occurrence of CVS or long‐term neurological outcome after aSAH.

Carotid IMT is more associated with stroke than risk calculators
ConclusionCIMT, but neither FRS nor ORS, is independently associated with stroke among Nigerian African hypertensive patients. CIMT may be a better tool for estimating the overall risk of stroke than FRS or ORS in this population.

Serial NIHSS scores in patients with acute cerebral infarction
ConclusionOur study demonstrates a hyperacute phase with rapid improvement probably due to early recanalization, an acute phase with no significant improvement and slow improvement in the subacute phase. Different pathophysiological mechanisms are likely involved in the different phases.

Comparison of upright balance in stroke, Parkinson and multiple sclerosis
The objective of the study was to assess the impact of MS, PD and ST on upright posture in eyes open condition and when visual and/or proprioceptive inputs are altered. Materials and methodsA total of 188 subjects with MS (n = 80), PD (n = 58) and ST (n = 50), mean age (SD), 57.9 (14.6) years, and 32 healthy subjects (HS) aged 53.7 (15.7) years were assessed by a stabilometric platform in a cross‐sectional study. ResultsCompared to HS, MS showed large deviations from normal performances with respect to magnitude (P < 0.001) and regularity (P < 0.05) of body sway irrespective of the altered sensory informa...

Recurrent ischemic stroke is associated with the burden of risk factors
ConclusionHistory of prior ischemic stroke in patients with acute ischemic stroke was associated with the burden of risk factors, atherosclerosis, and atrial fibrillation compared to first‐ever ischemic stroke. This has important implications for secondary preventive treatment.

Is the search for right‐to‐left shunt still worthwhile?
ConclusionsIn addition to recently defined criteria, genetically determined inheritable traits and epidemiologic characteristics (male gender) should be taken into account when assessing PFO and related cerebrovascular risk profile. A newly defined threshold in TCCD MB count is suggested to discriminate shunts related to stroke and TIA from innocent ones.

Early warning score predicts acute mortality in stroke patients
ConclusionsEarly warning score is a simple and valid tool for identifying patients at risk of dying after acute stroke. Readily available physiological parameters are converted to a single score, which can guide both nurses and physicians in clinical decision making and resource allocation.

Nocturnal periodic limb movements decrease antioxidant capacity in post‐stroke women
ConclusionsThis study suggests that PLMS was independently associated with decreased antioxidant capacity in women with ischemic stroke.

Age dependency of ischaemic stroke subtypes and vascular risk factors in western Norway: the Bergen Norwegian Stroke Cooperation Study
ConclusionThe proportion of stroke subtypes and vascular risk factors are age dependent. Age 50–74 years constitutes the period in life where cardiovascular risk factors become manifest and stroke subtypes change.

Serum soluble CD40 ligand levels after acute intracerebral hemorrhage
ConclusionsElevated serum sCD40L levels are independently associated with ICH severity and clinical outcomes. And sCD40L has potential to be a good prognostic biomarker of ICH.

Predicting risk of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage and mortality after treatment with recombinant tissue‐plasminogen activator using SEDAN score
ConclusionsHigher SEDAN score was associated with an increased risk of sICH and early mortality in this monocenter study.

CSF tau correlates with CJD disease severity and cognitive decline
ConclusionThe correlation between tau levels and the disease severity and degree of cognitive decline in patients with fCJD suggests that tau can be a biomarker reflecting the extent of neuronal damage.

C‐reactive protein levels are associated with cerebral small vessel‐related lesions
ConclusionsHigher levels of hs‐CRP were associated with lacunar infarcts. Thus, inflammatory processes may be involved in the pathogenesis of small‐vessel disease.

Prognostic indices for early mortality in ischaemic stroke – meta‐analysis
ConclusionsOur meta‐analysis has identified and summarized the performance of several prognostic scores with modest to good predictive accuracy for early mortality in ischaemic stroke, with the iSCORE having the broadest evidence base.

Case‐fatality and disability in the Tanzanian Stroke Incidence Project cohort
ConclusionsCase‐fatality rates are higher than reported in high‐income countries, with post‐stroke disability a significant predictor of death. Sustainable interventions to reduce post‐stroke disability in this setting should be investigated.
