Opportunities to better detect, manage and treat patients with undiagnosed atrial fibrillation
(Boston University School of Medicine) Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with a higher risk of complications including ischemic stroke, cognitive decline, heart failure, myocardial infarction and death. AF frequently is undetected until complications such as stroke or heart failure occur. A new report led by Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) researcher Emelia J. Benjamin, MD, ScM, builds upon a recently conducted National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's virtual workshop that focused on identifying key research priorities related to AF screening.

Identifying strategies to advance research on traumatic brain injury's effect on women
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) Analysis from a workshop convened by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) in 2017 reveals gaps in and opportunities for research to improve understanding of the effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in women. A new paper in the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation summarizes and updates the findings presented during the 'Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury in Women' workshop and provides strategies for advancing research efforts in this area. NINDS is part of the National Institutes of Health.

Increasing Stroke Knowledge and Decreasing Stroke Risk in a Latino Immigrant Population
We present results of an evaluation of a tailored, community-based intervention in Durham, North Carolina. The intervention included integration of stroke knowledge into classes and workshops at a community-based organization. Knowledge surveys were administered to participants immediately before and after stroke education, and at multiple points over the following year. For both low-risk participants receiving classroom-based education and individually care managed participants with risk factors, stroke knowledge improved dramatically and remained high among those who could be reached for follow-up. Assessing incident cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in epidemiological cohort studies in Germany.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results highlight the central role of self-reporting and the efforts associated with identification and verification of disease endpoints in cohort studies. They also provide a basis for future population-based studies that aim for standardized assessment of the incidence of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. SVIN announces 'Stroke: Mission thrombectomy 2020'
(Lazar Partners LTD) The Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology (SVIN) announced the launch of Mission Thrombectomy 2020, an initiative to enhance global efforts to improve stroke care worldwide by increasing the rate of stroke thrombectomy for eligible patients from less than 100,000 procedures today to 202,000 annually by 2020 and thereby reducing global stroke disability. The initiative was unveiled at the SVIN 9th Annual Meeting and 4th Annual Stroke Center Workshop, which took place from Nov.16-19, 2016 in Brooklyn, New York.

Addressing the challenges of cross-jurisdictional data linkage between a national clinical quality registry and government-held health data.
CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first time in Australia that person-level data from a clinical quality registry has been linked to hospital and mortality data across multiple Australian jurisdictions. IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH: The administrative load of obtaining linked data makes projects such as this burdensome but not impossible.
