Survivor gives us a lens into regional systems of care for acute ischemic stroke in North Dakota
I just got back from the North Dakota Mission: Lifeline STEMI and Acute Stroke Conference in Bismark, ND. I had a great time and I learned a lot. I often get asked to speak in various venues about acute STEMI and 12-lead ECG interpretation, but for this conference they wanted me to talk mostly about stroke. That turned out to be a good thing because it forced me to read the 2013 AHA / ASA Guildelines for the Early Management of Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke to make sure I was asking intelligent questions during the panel discussion (which I moderated) and also giving accurate information for the class I taught about ...

Individual and Community Determinants of Calling 911 for Stroke Among African Americans in an Urban Community Original Articles
Conclusions— Black adults and youth have a strong interest in stroke preparedness. Designs of behavioral interventions to increase stroke preparedness should be sensitive to both individual and community factors contributing to the likelihood of seeking emergency care for stroke.

Socioeconomic Position and Incidence of Ischemic Stroke in Denmark 2003-2012. A Nationwide Hospital-Based Study Stroke
Conclusions In Denmark, there is a strong relation between low socioeconomic position and risk for hospitalization for stroke. Lifestyle, as indicated by smoking, obesity, and alcohol consumption, and diabetes appears to increase the risk for stroke in people with lower socioeconomic position.

Using Large-Scale Linkage Data to Evaluate the Effectiveness of a National Educational Program on Antithrombotic Prescribing and Associated Stroke Prevention in Primary Care Stroke
ConclusionsConsistent with NPS MedicineWise program messages for the high‐risk CVD population, the NPS MedicineWise Stroke Prevention Program (2009) was associated with increased initiation of aspirin and a reduced rate of hospitalization for primary stroke. The findings suggest that the provision of evidence‐based multifaceted large‐scale educational programs in primary care can be effective in changing prescriber behavior and positively impacting patient health outcomes.

The Neighborhood Where You Live Is a Risk Factor for Stroke Original Articles
Conclusions— Our study shows that primordial risk factors such as poverty and education drive disparities in stroke mortality among neighborhoods in Arkansas.

Ethnic Differences in Prevalence of Post-stroke Depression Original Articles
Conclusions: MAs had a higher prevalence of PSD at 90 days than NHWs. The ethnic difference was explained by sociodemographic and health factors, especially low educational attainment.

Brunei epidemiological stroke study: patterns of hypertension and stroke risk
Conclusion: The prevalence of hypertension in Brunei is high in both women and men. Information campaigns and prevention programs are needed to be able to cope with the increasing problem of hypertension and resulting diseases like stroke in Brunei in the near future.

Abstract 267: Improving Inpatient Stroke Care by Implementing Stroke Units Across Health Systems Using an Improvement Collaborative Approach Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusions: This inter-provincial Quality Improvement Collaborative was successful in implementing and improving stroke units, and in improving best practice care of inpatient stroke patients. Critical success factors include the engagement of faculty from high-performing centers even if they exist outside the jurisdiction where improvement is sought, and the use of the 7-step framework for implementing stroke units.

Abstract 228: Assessing Knowledge, Perceptions, and Cultural Attitudes Towards Stroke in Elderly Korean-Americans: The Strengthening Our Korean Elders Through Community-Partnered Education (STROKE-COPE) Project Poster Session II
Conclusions: Elderly Korean-Americans have substantial risk for stroke, but possess both language and belief barriers that may interfere with stroke prevention and response. A stroke education curriculum tailored for elderly Korean-Americans must address these culturally specific beliefs to be effective.

Abstract 236: Poor Recurrent Stroke Prevention Knowledge in High Risk Stroke Survivors Poster Session II
Stroke is highly prevalent. Control of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and appropriate antithrombotic use are important in preventing recurrent stroke. Inadequate control of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors and poor stroke knowledge among transient ischemic attack (TIA) and stroke survivors impact stroke recurrence. We used a community-based participatory approach to recruit TIA/stroke survivors from community and clinical sites into a randomized controlled stroke prevention educational intervention trial. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of baseline survey responses describing demographics, clinical characteristics, an...

Abstract 116: Relationship of Stroke Unit Status With Quality of Care and Outcome for Acute Stroke Patients: Results From China National Stroke Registry II Session Title: Poster Session I
Conclusions: Our study showed that processes of care of AIS were better in patients in hospitals with stroke units. However, patients in hospitals with stroke units didn’t performance differences in clinical outcomes after discharge.

Abstract 205: Stroke Risk and Symptom Recognition Post Cardiac Catheterization Session Title: Poster Session PM
Over 1.4 million cardiac catheterization procedures (CCPs) take place yearly. CPP related stroke incidence in 1973 was reported as 0.23%. CCPs are invasive in nature with complications occurring due to unintentional trauma to preexisting atherosclerotic aortic plaques or thrombus formation at catheter/guidewire tips. Less common causes of ischemic stroke are air, left ventricular clot, hypotension, arterial dissection, fractured guidewire. Transient neurological deficits have been reported following high-osmolar contrast injection into carotid/vertebral arteries. With improved practice, current stroke incidence is 0.06%. P...

Genetically predicted higher educational attainment decreases the risk of stroke: a multivariable Mendelian randomization study
CONCLUSIONS: We found that genetically predicated higher EA decreased the risks of total stroke, ischemic stroke, and cardioembolic stroke, independent of smoking, alcohol consumption, BMI, intelligence, and hypertension.PMID:35710362 | DOI:10.1186/s12872-022-02713-7

Differential associations between pre-diabetes, diabetes and stroke occurrence among West Africans
CONCLUSION: Pre-DM is strongly and independently associated with stroke in Africans. Improving glycemic control through screening, healthy lifestyle and pharmacotherapy at a population level may be strategic in reducing the rising burden of stroke in Africa.PMID:36194925 | DOI:10.1016/j.jstrokecerebrovasdis.2022.106805

One-year recurrence of stroke and death in Lebanese survivors of first-ever stroke: Time-to-Event analysis
CONCLUSION: Higher rates of stroke recurrence and death were observed in the first year following a stroke in Lebanon. Various factors were identified as significant determinants. Thus, health care providers and officials in Lebanon can use these findings to implement effective preventive strategies to best address the management of these factors to reduce the stroke burden and improve the short and long-term prognosis of stroke survivors.PMID:36452174 | PMC:PMC9702576 | DOI:10.3389/fneur.2022.973200
