Development and validity of an innovative test to assess guideline-consistent clinical reasoning by physical therapists in stroke rehabilitation.
CONCLUSION: The script concordance test has good construct validity. Greater self-reported guideline knowledge, successful completion of the post-bachelor Dutch Neurorehabilitation course, as well as systematic participation in professional development activities facilitate important factors that enhance specialization. The script concordance test is a valid feedback tool for physical therapists to support professional development in the domain of stroke rehabilitation. Attributes of evidence-based occupational therapists in stroke rehabilitation.
Abstract BACKGROUND.: A better understanding of the features characterizing expert evidence-based occupational therapists in stroke rehabilitation is needed to inform the design of educational and knowledge translation interventions aimed at addressing research-practice gaps. PURPOSE.: The study aimed to identify the attributes of evidence-based occupational therapy stroke rehabilitation experts from the perspective of their peers. METHOD.: Forty-six occupational therapy clinicians and managers completed an online questionnaire asking them to nominate "outstanding" and "expert evidence-based" occupationa...

Effectiveness of a Web-Based Health Education Program to Promote Oral Hygiene Care Among Stroke Survivors: Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusions: The Web-based CPD program based on TPB increased general intention, attitudes, subjective norms, and knowledge to provide oral hygiene care among stroke carers for their patients. Changing subjective norms and perceived behavioral control are key factors associated with changes in general intention to provide oral hygiene care. Hospital rehabilitation for patients with obesity: a scoping review.
CONCLUSIONS: Evidence to guide rehabilitation for patients with obesity is sparse and weak. Rigorous comparative studies with clearly defined interventions and consensus outcome measures are needed. Implications for Rehabilitation Obesity rates have dramatically increased among patients requiring rehabilitation following joint arthroplasty, stroke, injury, or an acute medical event. There are currently no guidelines by which to define best practice for rehabilitating patients with obesity and comparative studies on rehabilitation programs are needed. Professional development focused on patient-centered rehabilitation and s...

Exploring the benefits of a stroke telemedicine programme: An organisational and societal perspective
Discussions with the Victorian Stroke Telemedicine management were undertaken and field notes were also reviewed. Several benefits of telemedicine were identified within and across participating hospitals, as well as for the state government and community. For hospitals, standardisation of clinical processes was reported, including improved stroke care co-ordination. Capacity building occurred through professional development and educational workshops. Enhanced networking, and resource sharing across hospitals was achieved between hospitals and organisations. Governments leveraged the Victorian Stroke Telemedicine programm...

Board #111 - Research Abstract Improving Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With a CPR Feedback Device and Refresher Simulations (CPR Cares Study): A Multicenter, Randomized Trial (Submission #8356).
Conclusion: The quality of CPR provided by healthcare providers is poor. It is feasible to improve CPR quality using a simple visual CPR quality feedback device during JIT CPR training (with video) or during a simulated CPA event (real-time feedback). JIT CPR VisF training and/or "real-time" VisF during CPR can improve compliance with AHA guidelines for CPR quality that are associated with improved survival outcomes. References: 1. Understanding clinicians' decisions to offer intravenous thrombolytic treatment to patients with acute ischaemic stroke: a protocol for a discrete choice experiment
Background Intravenous thrombolysis is an effective emergency treatment for acute ischaemic stroke for patients meeting specific criteria. Approximately 12% of eligible patients in England, Wales and Northern Ireland received thrombolysis in the first quarter of 2013, yet as many as 15% are eligible to receive treatment. Suboptimal use of thrombolysis may have been largely attributable to structural factors; however, with the widespread implementation of 24/7 hyper acute stroke services, continuing variation is likely to reflect differences in clinical decision-making, in particular the influence of ambiguous areas within ...

Evaluating a novel approach to enhancing dysphagia management: workplace‐based, blended e‐learning
ConclusionsWorkplace‐based, blended e‐learning was an acceptable, cost effective way of delivering essential clinical knowledge and skills about dysphagia. Relevance to clinical practiceDysphagia should be viewed as a patient safety issue because of the risks of malnutrition, dehydration and aspiration pneumonia. As such, it is pertinent to many members of the interdisciplinary team. Consideration should be given to including dysphagia management in initial education and continuing professional development programmes.

What Causes Muscle Weakness?
Discussion Muscle tone is the slight tension that is felt in a muscle when it is voluntarily relaxed. It can be assessed by asking the patient to relax and then taking the muscles through a range of motion such as moving the wrists, forearm and upper arm. Muscle strength is the muscle’s force against active resistance. Impaired strength is called weakness or paresis. There are 5 levels of muscle strength. 0 = No muscle contraction detected 1 = Barely detected flicker of contraction 2 = Active movement with gravity eliminated 3 = Active movement against gravity 4 = Active movement against gravity and some resistance ...
