The economic burden of stroke: a systematic review of cost of illness studies
J Med Life. 2021 Sep-Oct;14(5):606-619. doi: 10.25122/jml-2021-0361.ABSTRACTStroke is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. As the number of stroke cases is rising from one year to another, policymakers require data on the amount spent on stroke to enforce better financing policies for prevention, hospital care, outpatient rehabilitation services and social services. We aimed to systematically assess the economic burden of stroke at global level. Cost of stroke studies were retrieved from five databases. Gender differences in antithrombotic treatment in patients with atrial fibrillation from Spain versus the rest of Western Europe. GLORIA-AF Program
CONCLUSIONS: OAC rates were higher in Spain as compared to rWE. More women received OACs in Spain, while in rWE no difference by gender was observed. DOACs in rWE are the most prescribed OAC while in Spain, due to prescription barriers, its use remains low for both genders and VKAs are preferred. Spanish women received more DOACs compared to men. (NCT01468701).PMID:34895750 | DOI:10.1016/j.medcli.2021.09.016

Disparities in the control of Diabetes type 2 and incidence of cardiovascular events. The APNA study
ConclusionsAdjusting by risk factors, and control variables for type 2 diabetes mellitus being attended by GP in the worst indicator cluster adds an additional 15% risk of having a cardiovascular event requiring hospitalization. Efforts should be made to improve quality of DM2 care and to reduce the disparities among GPs.Key messagesThere is great variability in the quality of health care for patients with type II diabetes specially in the proportion of diabetics with HbA1c higher or equal to 9% that differs greatly among GPs.Diabetic type 2 patients cared for by general practitioners in the worst quality group have a 15%....

Allogeneic adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells in ischaemic stroke (AMASCIS-02): a phase IIb, multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial protocol
Introduction Stroke is a serious public health problem, given it is a major cause of disability worldwide despite the spread of recanalisation therapies. Enhancement of brain plasticity with stem cell administration is a promising innovative therapy to reduce sequelae in these patients. Methods and analysis We have developed a phase IIb, multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial protocol to evaluate the safety and efficacy of intravenous administration of allogeneic adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) in patients with acute ischaemic stroke, concurrently with conventional...

Cardiovascular diseases in people with diabetes mellitus in Spain according to the Primary Care Clinical Database (BDCAP) in 2017
CONCLUSIONS: This study shows the high cardiovascular comorbidity of patients with diabetes in Spain, with a greater excess of risk in patients under 65 years of age, more pronounced in women. We should offer more intensive treatment for DM2 in women.PMID:33810870 | DOI:10.1016/j.medcli.2020.12.040
