Visual perceptual deficit screening in stroke survivors: evaluation of current practice in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland
CONCLUSIONS: Visual perceptual deficits are screened post-stroke at a similar rate to sensory vision or visual neglect. Underdiagnosis of visual perceptual deficits may stem from both reliance on subjective and non-standardised screening approaches, and conflicting definitions of visual perception held among clinicians. We recommend increased training provision and use of brief performance-based screening tools.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONLack of agreement among clinicians on what constitutes as visual perceptual or sensory vision deficits may prove problematic, as precise and exact language is often required for clinic...

Inclusion of stroke patients in expanded cardiac rehabilitation services: a cross-national qualitative study with cardiac and stroke rehabilitation professionals.
CONCLUSIONS: Hybrid cardiac rehabilitation programmes could be tailored to deliver stroke-specific education, exercises and multidisciplinary expertise. Post-stroke cognitive impairment was identified as a key barrier to participation in cardiac rehabilitation. A cognitive rehabilitation intervention could potentially be delivered as part of cardiac rehabilitation, to address the cognitive needs of stroke and cardiac patients. Implications for rehabilitation The cardiac rehabilitation model has the potential to be expanded to include mild stroke patients given the commonality of secondary prevention needs. Up to half of st...

20 years of researching stroke through audit.
This article records and reviews some questions that have been answered using data from the audit: Is the rate of institutional care after rehabilitation a possible measure of outcome? Does stroke unit care in routine practice give the benefits shown in randomized controlled trials? How is the quality of stroke care affected by a patient's age and the time of their stroke? Do patient-reported measures match those obtained from the professionals recording of processes of care? How do the processes of care after stroke affect mortality? Is thrombolysis safe to use in patients over the age of 80? Do staffing levels matter? Do...

Exploring functional outcomes and allied health staffing levels in an inpatient paediatric rehabilitation unit.
CONCLUSIONS: This review from a tertiary hospital-based inpatient paediatric rehabilitation service provides information regarding the length of stay, functional change and allied health workload for children and adolescents on active inpatient rehabilitation programs. As expected, total and rehabilitation episode length of stay, functional improvement and allied health contact and input varied according to diagnostic groups. This information is likely to be of value to other Paediatric Rehabilitation Medicine inpatient units when developing staffing for services and benchmarking service delivery. Implications for Rehabili...
