Croatian study on COVID-19-positive stroke patients during the second wave of the pandemic
CONCLUSION: Ischemic stroke after COVID-19 differs in etiology from ischemic stroke complicated by COVID-19 infection. Both patient groups are characterized by severe disability and high mortality. Raising the awareness of prehospital stroke and optimization of clinical workflow are important if we want to improve the stroke outcomes by acute recanalization techniques.PMID:36325667 | PMC:PMC9648083 | DOI:10.3325/cmj.2022.63.431

Lifestyle and quality of life in working-age people after stroke.
LIFESTYLE AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN WORKING-AGE PEOPLE AFTER STROKE. Acta Clin Croat. 2020 Mar;59(1):30-36 Authors: Kowalczyk B, Zawadzka B Abstract Recommendations for changing one's lifestyle in the aspect of factors that increase the risk of another stroke are often included in the plan of caring for patients after stroke. The style of life is connected to the quality of life and can be formed not only by socialization but also by conscious work on its health-promoting aspect. Lifestyle is a unique configuration of everyday behavior depending mostly on the quality of life available. The aim of the rese...

The effect of post stroke depression on functional outcome and quality of life.
Authors: Žikić TR, Divjak I, Jovićević M, Semnic M, Slankamenac P, Žarkov M, Žikić M Abstract In spite of being a common and important complication of stroke, post stroke depression is often overlooked, so its impact on stroke outcome remains under recognized. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of depression on functional outcome and quality of life in stroke patients. The study included 60 patients treated for their first clinical stroke, 30 of them diagnosed with depression and 30 patients without depression. Testing was done in all patients two and six weeks after stroke. Depression was diag...

Predictors of early-onset depression after first-ever stroke.
PREDICTORS OF EARLY-ONSET DEPRESSION AFTER FIRST-EVER STROKE. Acta Clin Croat. 2020 Mar;59(1):81-90 Authors: Rabi-Žikić T, Živanović Ž, Đajić V, Simić S, Ružička-Kaloci S, Slankamenac S, Žikić M Abstract Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a severe and frequent stroke complication and one of the crucial factors for the outcome of rehabilitation and life quality after stroke. However, mood disorders frequently remain unnoticed and therefore untreated. The aim of the study was to examine all the potential risk factors and determine the independent predictors of early-onset depression after first-...

Distribution of Stroke Risk Factors in Eastern Croatia.
Authors: Rostohar Bijelić B, Petek M, Kadojić M, Bijelić N, Kadojić D Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of risk factors according to age, gender, subtypes and recurrence of stroke in eastern Croatia. The study included 250 acute stroke patients admitted to University Department of Neurology, Osijek University Hospital Centre in 2011. Patients were grouped according to age, gender, subtypes and recurrence of stroke. The study showed significant differences in the distribution of cigarette smoking, diabetes, cardiomyopathy and hyperuricemia according to patient age. According to gen...

Incidence of Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack in Croatia: A Population Based Study.
Abstract The aim of this population based neuroepidemiological study was to establish the real incidence rates of acute cerebrovascular disease (CVD): stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) in the Republic of Croatia. Multicentric study included 89 501 persons of all ages in four regional centres in Croatia: Zagreb, Osijek + Slavonski Brod, Rijeka and Split. The following incidence rates of stroke, expressed at population of 100 000, have been established: Zagreb 290.52, Osijek + Slavonski Brod 302.14, Rijeka 219.65, Split 195.82. Incidence rate of stroke for the Republic of Croatia is 251.39. The following in...

Prevalence of genetic polymorphisms of CYP2C9 and VKORC1 — Implications for warfarin management and outcome in Croatian patients with acute stroke
Conclusion: Our data indicated rapid and safe anticoagulation achieved by using pharmacogenetically-predicted warfarin dose in high-risk acute stroke patients without increasing the risk of warfarin dosage complications in an elderly population.Highlights:

PPARγ and IL-6 -174G>C gene variants in Croatian patients with ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSION: We can point to the IL-6 -174G>C polymorphisms as candidate gene marker and risk factor for the prediction of ischemic stroke. PMID: 25659766 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Relationship between weather conditions and admissions for ischemic stroke and subarachnoid hemorrhage.
CONCLUSION: Higher number of ischemic stroke and SAH cases can be expected with the daily lowest and highest air pressure, highest air temperature. Presence of hurricanes or tropical storms increased the risk of ischemic stroke but not the SAH. These findings can help to develop preventive health plans for cerebrovascular diseases. The Impact of Comorbidity on Rehabilitation Outcome after Ischemic Stroke.
Authors: Simić-Panić D, Bošković K, Milićević M, Rabi Žikić T, Cvjetković Bošnjak M, Tomašević-Todorović S, Jovićević M Abstract Comorbidity decreases survival but it still remains unknown to what extent functional recovery after ischemic stroke is affected. The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence of the most common comorbidities in patients with ischemic stroke and to examine their predictive value on the functional status and recovery. In order to obtain relevant information for this research, we conducted a prospective study over a two-year period. It included patients with acute/...

The effect of atorvastatin on the common carotid artery intima-media thickness in patients with ischemic stroke.
Authors: Khazaei M, Khosravi M, Mazaheri S, Mazdeh M, Ghiasian M, Taheri M, Ghafouri-Fard S Abstract Occlusion of the initial segment of internal carotid artery is the most common reason for vascular events in the brain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of one-year treatment with atorvastatin on intima-media thickness (IMT) of carotid arteries as a measure of atherosclerosis in stroke patients. In this prospective interventional study, 44 patients with ischemic stroke were investigated. Patients were treated with atorvastatin 40 mg once a day for one year. IMT of carotid arteries was measured...

Necroptosis is one of the modalities of cell death accompanying ischemic brain stroke: from pathogenesis to therapeutic possibilities.
Abstract Due to very limited therapeutic options, ischemic brain injury is one of the leading causes of death and lifelong disability worldwide, which imposes enormous public health burden. One of the main events occurring with ischemic brain stroke is cell death. Necroptosis is a type of cell death described as a regulated necrosis characterized by cell membrane disruption mediated by phosphorylated mixed lineage kinase like protein (MLKL). It can be triggered by activation of death receptors (eg, FAS, TNFR1), which lead to receptor-interacting serine/threonine-protein kinase 3 (RIPK3) activation by RIPK1 in the ...
