Sex differences in the association between stroke risk factors and pre-clinical predictors of stroke in the childhood determinants of Adult Health study
CONCLUSIONS: Smoking, SBP and glucose affect carotid structure and function more in women than men with some of this risk due to co-occurring risk factors.PMID:37391336 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2023.06.077

Comparison of Parameters for Assessment of Carotid Stiffness and Their Association with Carotid Atherosclerosis in Rural Australian Adults: A Pilot Study
J Clin Med. 2023 Apr 18;12(8):2935. doi: 10.3390/jcm12082935.ABSTRACTCarotid stiffness has been associated with the development and progression of carotid artery disease and is an independent factor for stroke and dementia. There has also been a lack of comparison of different ultrasound-derived carotid stiffness parameters and their association with carotid atherosclerosis. This pilot study aimed to investigate the associations between carotid stiffness parameters (derived via ultrasound echo tracking) and the presence of carotid plaques in Australian rural adults. In cross-sectional analyses, we assessed forty-six subjec...

Emergent readmission and long-term mortality risk after incident atrial fibrillation hospitalisation
Conclusion This study highlights the large burden of unplanned all-cause and cardiovascular-specific readmissions within 2 years after being hospitalised for incident AF and their associated adverse impact on mortality. Concomitant comorbidities are independently associated with unplanned hospitalisations and mortality, which supports integrated multidisciplinary management of comorbidities, along with AF-targeted treatments, to improve long-term outcomes in patients with AF.

Relationship Between MicroRNA Signature and Arterial Stiffness in Patients With Ischemic Stroke
CONCLUSIONS: The expression level of let-7i was independently related to arterial stiffness in patients with cerebral infarction, suggesting that it plays a pathophysiological role in atherosclerosis.PMID:36606643 | DOI:10.3988/jcn.2023.19.1.28

Lipoprotein(a) levels in a global population with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
CONCLUSIONS: Globally, Lp(a) is measured in a small minority of patients with ASCVD and is highest in black, younger and female patients. More than 25% of patients had levels exceeding the established threshold for increased cardiovascular risk, approximately 50 mg/dL or 125 nmol/L.PMID:36252994 | DOI:10.1136/openhrt-2022-002060

Stroke Epidemiology and Incidence in Regional Queensland: Findings of the Regional Queensland Stroke (REQUEST) Study
CONCLUSIONS: Incidence of stroke in a regional Queensland population is similar to other regional populations and when compared with larger cities. Despite a global trend in stroke reduction, modifiable risk factors like hypertension and atrial arrhythmias continue to be over-represented in the stroke population. All-cause mortality after stroke is high especially during the initial period. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.PMID:36001407 | DOI:10.1111/imj.15917

Association of carbohydrate and saturated fat intake with cardiovascular disease and mortality in Australian women
Conclusions In middle-aged Australian women, moderate carbohydrate intake (41.0%–44.3% of TEI) was associated with the lowest risk of CVD, without an effect on total mortality. Increasing saturated fat intake was not associated with CVD or mortality and instead correlated with lower rates of diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

Generation of cardio-protective antibodies after pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine: Early results from a randomised controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: PPV engenders a long-lasting increase in anti-pneumococcal IgG, and to a lesser extent, IgM titres, as well as a transient increase in anti-OxLDL IgM antibodies. However, there were no detectable changes in surrogate markers of atherosclerosis at the 2-year follow-up. Long-term, prospective follow-up of clinical outcomes is continuing to assess if PPV reduces CVD events.PMID:35290813 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2022.02.011

Clinical features, sex differences and outcomes of myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries: a registry analysis
Conclusion The incidence of MINOCA was 9.5%. Compared to OACD-MI, patients with MINOCA have less cardiac risk factors. In-hospital outcomes of patients diagnosed with MINOCA were better than OACD-MI.
