Anticoagulation knowledge in patients with atrial fibrillation: An Australian survey
ConclusionThe study identified knowledge gaps in patients taking OACs, and these deficiencies appeared to be greater in participants taking DOACs. Knowledge assessment should be integrated into patient counselling sessions to help identify and resolve knowledge deficits.

Pioneering Australia ’s First Atrial Fibrillation Guidelines
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia seen in clinical practice, and has a major impact on morbidity and mortality; linked to one in 12 deaths in Australia [2]. Though appropriate rhythm management and stroke prevention are essential, arguably, prevention is likely to achieve the greatest impact on these outcomes. These Australian-first guidelines [1], developed by the Heart Foundation and the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, incorporate the latest contemporary evidence in AF prevention by recommending a holistic approach.

Factors affecting general practitioners' decisions to adopt new prescription drugs - cohort analyses using Australian longitudinal physician survey data.
CONCLUSIONS: Our paper is one of the first to study the relationship between GPs' risk preferences, personality and their decisions to adopt new prescription drugs. Because NOACs are commonly prescribed and considered more cost-effective than their older counterpart, understanding factors affecting physicians' decisions to adopt NOACs has direct policy implications. Our results also highlight that even with universal coverage for prescription drugs, access to new drugs is different among patients, partially because who their doctors are and where they practice. Adherence to antithrombotic therapy guidelines and atrial fibrillation in a rural hospital: a clinical audit.

Stroke Risk Stratification: CHA2DS2-VA or CHA2DS2-VASc?
It is with interest that we note the letter by Drs Overvad and colleagues in which concern is expressed regarding a newly proposed strategy in the recently published Australian Guidelines for Atrial Fibrillation (AF) [1]. Specifically we recommend that female sex category be dropped from the CHA2DS2-VASc score; therefore recommending a CHA2DS2-VA score.

Feasibility and acceptability of opportunistic screening to detect atrial fibrillation in Aboriginal adults.
CONCLUSION: The iECG device was well accepted within ACCHSs and was feasible to use to screen for AF among Aboriginal patients. Implications for public health: The device can be used in clinical and community settings to screen Aboriginal people for atrial fibrillation to help reduce rates of stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. Anticoagulant Initiation During Hospital Admissions for Atrial Fibrillation in South-East Queensland, Australia
Anticoagulation reduces stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) but under-prescribing in eligible patients has been commonly reported. Introduction of the direct acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) was considered to potentially improve prescribing due to increased anticoagulant options. At the time of release to the Australian market, there were limited studies investigating anticoagulant usage during hospitalisations for AF. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate prescribing of oral anticoagulants during hospitalisation admissions for AF during the time of DOAC introduction to the Australian market.

Intermountain chronic disease risk score (ICHRON) validation for prediction of incident chronic disease diagnoses in an australian primary prevention population.
CONCLUSION: ICHRON predicted ChrD diagnosis at 3-years among an external, geographically distant validation cohort. These findings show the value of ICHRON for primary care patients in distinct locales. Additionally, electronic calculation of ICHRON empowers the clinical use of this tool to identify and differentially manage and treat high-risk patients.
