Causal associations between type 1 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases: a Mendelian randomization study
CONCLUSION: This MR study provided evidence supporting the causal effect of T1DM on peripheral atherosclerosis and coronary atherosclerosis, with hypertension partly mediating this effect.PMID:37659996 | PMC:PMC10475187 | DOI:10.1186/s12933-023-01974-6

Long-term risk of recurrent cerebrovascular events after patent foramen ovale closure: Results from a real-world stroke cohort
CONCLUSION: In this long-term follow-up-study of patients with a cerebral ischaemic event who had received PFO-closure with different devices, rates of recurrent stroke/TIA were low and largely related to large artery atherosclerosis and small vessel disease. Thorough vascular risk factor control seems crucial for secondary stroke prevention in patients treated for PFO-related stroke.PMID:37658692 | DOI:10.1177/23969873231197564

Association of immune checkpoint inhibitors therapy with arterial thromboembolic events in cancer patients: A retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: ICI-treated patients may exhibit a higher risk of ATEs, especially after 1 year of treatment.PMID:37584246 | DOI:10.1002/cam4.6455

Mitral Annular Calcification and Thromboembolic Risk
Conclusions: The presence of MAC is associated with greater TE risk scores and a higher risk of vascular disease. It appears that adding MAC as a vascular disease parameter to TE risk scores may have benefits for patients by improving their predictive value.PMID:37511943 | PMC:PMC10381637 | DOI:10.3390/life13071568

Stroke-Specific Predictors of Major Bleeding in Anticoagulated Patients With Stroke and Atrial Fibrillation: A Nationwide Multicenter Registry-Based Study
CONCLUSIONS: This study found that major bleeding risk was independently associated with stroke-specific factors in anticoagulated patients with stroke and AF. This has the clinical implication that baseline characteristics of patients with stroke and AF should be considered in secondary prevention, which would bring the net clinical benefit of balancing recurrent stroke prevention with minimal bleeding complications.PMID:37455504 | DOI:10.3988/jcn.2022.0289

ICAM-1 and VCAM-1: gatekeepers in various inflammatory and cardiovascular disorders
Clin Chim Acta. 2023 Jul 11:117487. doi: 10.1016/j.cca.2023.117487. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLeukocyte migration from the vascular compartment is critical fornormal lymphocyte recirculation in specific tissues and immune response in inflammatory locations. Leukocyte recruitment, migration to inflammatory areas, and targeting in the extravascular space are caused by cellular stimulation and local expression of adhesion molecules. Intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) and Vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) belong to the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell adhesion molecules with a crucial role in mediating t...

Demographics, Risk Factors, and Etiology of Posterior Cerebral Artery Stroke Causing Homonymous Hemianopia
CONCLUSIONS: Most patients in our PCA cohort had multiple conventional stroke risk factors, a finding not previously documented. Mean age at stroke onset and AF frequency were lower than in our ICA/MCA cohort, in agreement with previous studies. As some other studies have found, nearly 1/3 of strokes were attributed to cardioaortic embolism. Within that group, AF was often a poststroke diagnosis, a finding not previously highlighted. Compared with earlier studies, a relatively high portion of strokes were of undetermined etiology and of other determined etiologies, including stroke after endovascular or surgical interventi...

NOAC Therapy According to CHA2DS2-VASc Without Atrial Fibrillation: A Systematic Review
Cardiol Rev. 2023 Jul 11. doi: 10.1097/CRD.0000000000000570. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAccording to Quality-Adjusted Life Expectancy, novel oral anticoagulant therapy is preferred when the stroke risk is higher than 0.9% per year. CHA2DS2-VASc is a tool to select those patients at high risk for stroke due to atherosclerosis and atrial cardiopathy, who could benefit from anticoagulation even in sinus rhythm. Systematic electronic database searches were conducted using Pubmed and Scopus. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Statement 2020 was followed. Thirteen studies were included, com...

Warfarin faring better: Vitamin K antagonists beat rivaroxaban and apixaban in the INVICTUS and PROACT Xa trials
J Thromb Haemost. 2023 Jul 8:S1538-7836(23)00523-8. doi: 10.1016/j.jtha.2023.06.036. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough guidelines give preference to the direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) over vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) for stroke prevention in most patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), DOACs are not recommended in those with rheumatic heart disease or mechanical heart valves. The results of the INVICTUS trial (Investigation of Rheumatic AF Treatment Using Vitamin K Antagonists, Rivaroxaban or Aspirin Studies), which compared rivaroxaban with a VKA in patients with rheumatic heart disease associated AF, and the PR...

Mitral annular calcification as a predictor of stroke in the multiethnic study of atherosclerosis
CONCLUSION: MAC is an independent predictor of long-term stroke risk in a racially diverse population beyond conventional cardiovascular risk factors and atrial fibrillation.PMID:37409651 | DOI:10.2459/JCM.0000000000001524

The Association between Ischemic Stroke Subtype and Stroke Severity: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study
DISCUSSION: Embolic stroke was associated with greater stroke severity at the time of the event, and higher risk of death versus thrombotic stroke, even after careful adjustment for patient-level differences.PMID:37414568 | DOI:10.1212/WNL.0000000000207535
