Moderate alcohol intake reduces risk of ischemic stroke in Korea
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that light to moderate distilled alcohol consumption may reduce the risk of ischemic stroke in Koreans.

Serum matrix metalloproteinase-9 levels and prognosis of acute ischemic stroke
Conclusions: Higher serum MMP-9 levels in the acute phase of ischemic stroke were associated with increased risk of mortality and major disability, suggesting that serum MMP-9 could be an important prognostic factor for ischemic stroke.

Brain Natriuretic Peptide in Acute Ischemic Stroke
Elevated serum brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels are associated with cardioembolic stroke mainly because of atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the mechanisms of increased serum BNP levels are hitherto unclear. We aimed to identify the factors associated with increased BNP levels in patients with acute ischemic stroke. We measured serum BNP levels in consecutive patients aged 18 years or older. Stroke subtypes were classified using the Trial of ORG 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment criteria. C-reactive Protein and Homocysteine Predict Long-term Mortality in Young Ischemic Stroke Patients
Conclusions: There is an independent association between CRP and homocysteine levels obtained several years after ischemic stroke in young adults and subsequent mortality, even when adjusting for traditional risk factors. This association seems to continue for at least 12 years after the measurements.

Healthy diet and lifestyle and risk of stroke in a prospective cohort of women

Midlife Alcohol Consumption and the Risk of Stroke in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Self-reported light-to-moderate alcohol consumption at midlife was not associated with reduced stroke risk compared with abstention over 20 years of follow-up in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study. Heavier consumption increased the risk for both outcomes as did moderate intake for ICH.

Analysis of regional differences in the incidence of stroke, even within Japan, is complicated, because many factors may influence the conclusions, including regional differences of pollutants, temperature, lifestyle factors (such as salt, smoking, and alcohol consumption levels), and the distribution of facilities (urban or rural areas) contributing data to the Japanese Standard Stroke Registry Study (JSSRS). A Pilot Trial of a Lifestyle Intervention for Stroke Survivors: Design of Healthy Eating and Lifestyle after Stroke (HEALS)
Stroke survivors have high rates of subsequent cardiovascular and recurrent cerebrovascular events, and mortality. While healthy lifestyle practices - including a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, limited alcohol intake, and regular physical activity - can mitigate these outcomes, few stroke survivors adhere to them. Minorities from socioeconomically disadvantaged communities who obtain care in safety-net health systems experience the most barriers to implementing healthy lifestyle changes after stroke.

Relationship between Alcohol Intake and Stroke Severity in Japanese Patients: a Sex- and Subtype-Stratified Analysis
Stroke is a severe disease that causes disability in many patients, warranting the urgent development of treatment options.1-4 Previous studies have reported that the risk of hemorrhagic stroke (HS) linearly increases with increasing alcohol intake.5-12 Furthermore, moderate alcohol intake has been shown to lower the risk of ischemic stroke (IS), and a J-curve association has been observed between alcohol consumption and morbidity rate of IS.7-14 These reports were similar in that they considered alcohol intake as a risk factor for stroke development.
