[The Conversation Africa] Noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular conditions account for 41 million deaths each year. That's more than 70% of all deaths globally. Most of these deaths (77%) are in low-income and middle-income countries - including those in Africa.

CONCLUSION: Apart from the loss of grey-white matter differentiation, there was no significant association between the other CT scan features and sex. Prevalence of echocardiographic left atrial enlargement among hypertensive Nigerian subjects
Conclusion: LAE is common among Nigerian hypertensive subjects. Age, waist circumference, left ventricular wall dimension and mass index are the important correlates of LAE in hypertensive Nigerians.Keywords: Left atrial enlargement; hypertension; prevalence; Nigeria.

Prevalence and determinants of cardiac arrhythmias and conduction anomalies in adults aged ≥ 40 years in Jimma Town, Southwest of Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study
Conclusions: CA is highly prevalent in Jimma. Hypertension and history of heart diseases are the most potent predictors of cardiac arrhythmia. Stroke: A retrospective review of the incidence and epidemiology in a South African academic hospital emergency department
CONCLUSIONS: Stroke is an important healthcare concern for SA. Our study demonstrated a lower mean age of patients presenting with stroke compared with high- and upper middle-income countries, and a higher proportion of haemorrhagic strokes. Several modifiable risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes were identified.
