Association between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and cardiovascular mortality in statin non-users: a prospective cohort study in 14.9 million Korean adults
ConclusionLDL-C had U-curve associations for CVD mortality. The associations and optimal ranges differed across CVD subtypes. Women and older adults had weaker positive associations than men and younger adults. Positive associations with ischaemic heart disease and ischaemic stroke were maintained in adults aged 75 –84 years.

Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of statins as the primary prevention for patients with a high serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level and as the secondary prevention after an acute coronary event have shown that lowering serum LDL-C levels reduces the risks of myocardial infarction, stroke, and vascular death. These trials included stroke as a secondary end point but not as an entry criterion. CONCLUSIONS: Targeting an LDL cholesterol of <70 mg/dL compared with 100±10 mg/dL in patients with atherosclerotic ischemic stroke nonsignificantly increased the risk of ICH. Incident ICHs were not associated with low LDL cholesterol.
