Will unpredictable side effects dim the promise of new Alzheimer ’s drugs?
A sea change is underway in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, where for the first time a drug that targets the disease’s pathology and clearly slows cognitive decline has hit the U.S. market. A related therapy will likely be approved in the coming months. As many neurologists, patients, and brain scientists celebrate, they’re also nervously eyeing complications from treatment: brain swelling and bleeding, which in clinical trials affected up to about one-third of patients and ranged from asymptomatic to fatal. The side effect—amyloid-related imaging abnormalities, or ARIA—remains mysterious. “We don’...

P62 Continuing early mTICI 2b reperfusion during mechanical thrombectomy is not beneficial for all patients
ConclusionContinuing MT after early mTICI2b might improve functional outcome of the patients who are successfully converted to mTICI2c/3 but an increase in complications due to further retrieval attempts may diminish the potential functional benefit.ReferencesGoyal M, Menon BK, Van Zwam WH, et al. P78 How far is too far in stroke thrombectomy? From XL to XS vessel occlusions with radially adjustable stent-retrievers - Tigertriever XL and Tigertriever 13
ConclusionMechanical thrombectomy for both primary or secondary DMVO seems feasible and as safe as for LVO. Our initial experience using the Tigertriever13 is of special interest as it shows we can potentially significantly expand AIS population that can benefit from mechanical thrombectomy treatment.ReferencesGuenego A, Mine B, Bonnet T, et al. P80 Aspiration thrombectomy of acute ischemic stroke patients with anterior circulation tandem lesion
ConclusionsAspiration thrombectomy restored blood flow and resulted in good 90-day functional outcome in AIS patients with anterior circulation tandem lesion. The 90-day mortality rate in these patients was low. Clinical outcomes were similar between patients with and without stent. E-182 A multicentric experience for the use of flow diverter in the treatment of anterior communicating artery aneurysms
ConclusionFlow diverters appear to be a safe and effective treatment for anterior communicating artery aneurysms, presenting as an alternative strategy in the armamentarium of interventionalist. Mid-term results were favorable, and complication rates were low. Additional studies with longer follow-up time and independent adjudication are warranted to confirm the safety and effectiveness of the technique.Disclosures V. Benalia: None. G. Cortez: None. N. O-032 Treatment outcomes for ARUBA eligible brain arteriovenous malformations: a comparison of real world data from the NVQI-QOD AVM registry to the ARUBA trial
ConclusionARUBA eligible patients from the NVQI-QOD registry demonstrate a significantly lower risk of stroke or death with intervention of 8.0% (N=174) compared to the 30.7% (N=114) ARUBA trial interventional risk, and is nearly equivalent to the ARUBA trial medical management risk of 10.1% (N=109) over 33 months.Disclosures N. A journey through clinic and research
I started to study Medicine at the University of Genoa, Italy more than 20 years ago and I now realize that I was quite far from understanding what ‘Medicine’ really means. After weeks and weeks spent on books during the first year, I understood that becoming a MD not only requires the willingness to help people with health problems, but also strong motivation and dedication to learn a huge amount of notions. In Italy, as it is the case for several other countries, the University courses last 6 years, during which the MD student is fully engaged by individual study, lessons and seminars, exercises, and internships. Wit...
