What Sub-Saharan African Nations Can Teach the U.S. About Black Maternal Health
While poor maternal outcomes among Black women in the U.S. is not new, improving it is imperative. U.S. policymakers can look to sub-Saharan Africa for guidance on reversing this trend. Credit: Ernest Ankomah/IPSBy Ifeanyi NsoforABUJA, Jun 2 2023 (IPS) New research shows that Black mothers in the United States disproportionately live in counties with higher maternal vulnerability and face greater risk of preterm death for the fetus, greater risk of low birth weight for a baby, and a higher number of maternal deaths. While poor maternal outcomes among Black women in the U.S. is not new, improving it is imperative. U.S. poli...

Aortic arch repair: lessons learned over three decades at Baylor College of Medicine
J Cardiovasc Surg (Torino). 2022 May 27. doi: 10.23736/S0021-9509.22.12376-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe treatment of complex aortic arch disease continues to be among the most demanding cardiovascular operations, with a considerable risk of death and stroke. Since January 1990, our single-practice service has performed over 3,000 repairs of the aortic arch. Our aim is to describe the progression of our technical approach to open aortic arch repair. Our center's surgical technique has evolved considerably over the last three decades. When it comes to initial arterial cannulation, we have shifted away from femoral ar...

Acute basilar artery occlusion with recurrent shivering: A case report
Rationale: Shivering is an important physiological response of the body that causes muscle tremors to maintain temperature homeostasis. Traumatic brain injuries that affect the hypothalamus cause hypothermia, and physical removal of suprasellar tumors causes thermoregulation imbalance. However, no study has reported shivering due to ischemic stroke. Patient concerns: A 58-year-old male patient was admitted to our emergency department to evaluate severe stenosis of the basilar artery. While waiting for further examination, he exhibited coarse shivering and severe dysarthria. Diagnosis: Brain computed tomography angi...

Complete Resolution of Postoperative Hemiparesis following Carotid Endarterectomy with Therapeutic Hypothermia: A Case Study and Literature Review
We present the case of a 65-year-old woman with a clinical cerebrovascular accident following a right carotid endarterectomy who was treated with a 24-hr hypothermia protocol and had a full recovery.

A lesson on induction of hypothermia and measurement of efficacy
Brain injuries caused by stroke are common and costly in human and resource terms. The result of stroke is a cascade of molecular and physiological derangement, cell death, damage and inflammation in the brain. This, together with infection, if present, commonly results in patients having an increased temperature, which is associated with worse outcome. The usual clinical goal in stroke is therefore to reduce temperature to normal, or below normal (hypothermia) to reduce swelling if brain pressure is increased. However, research evidence does not yet conclusively show whether or not cooling patients after stroke improves t...
