Association of Plasma A β 42/40 Ratio and Late-Onset Epilepsy: Results From the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study
DISCUSSION: A reduction in plasma Aβ42/Aβ40 is associated with an increased risk of subsequent epilepsy. Our observations provide a further validation of the link between Aβ, hyperexcitable states, and LOE.PMID:37541842 | DOI:10.1212/WNL.0000000000207635

Sleep Architecture, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and Cognitive Function in Adults
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This study found that better sleep consolidation and the absence of OSA were associated with better global cognition over 5 years of follow-up. These findings suggest that the role of interventions to improve sleep for maintaining cognitive function requires investigation.PMID:37462968 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2023.25152

Association Between Acute Myocardial Infarction and Cognition
CONCLUSIONS: This cohort study using pooled data from 6 cohort studies found that incident MI was not associated with a decrease in global cognition, memory, or executive function at the time of the event compared with no MI but was associated with faster declines in global cognition, memory, and executive function over time. These findings suggest that prevention of MI may be important for long-term brain health.PMID:37252710 | DOI:10.1001/jamaneurol.2023.1331

Subclinical Vascular Composites Predict Clinical Cardiovascular Disease, Stroke, and Dementia: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)
CONCLUSIONS: Subclinical vascular composites of arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis may be useful biomarkers to inform the vascular pathways contributing to events of CVD, CHD, stroke, and dementia.PMID:37205504 | PMC:PMC10187443 | DOI:10.1101/2023.05.01.23289364

Comparison of Parameters for Assessment of Carotid Stiffness and Their Association with Carotid Atherosclerosis in Rural Australian Adults: A Pilot Study
J Clin Med. 2023 Apr 18;12(8):2935. doi: 10.3390/jcm12082935.ABSTRACTCarotid stiffness has been associated with the development and progression of carotid artery disease and is an independent factor for stroke and dementia. There has also been a lack of comparison of different ultrasound-derived carotid stiffness parameters and their association with carotid atherosclerosis. This pilot study aimed to investigate the associations between carotid stiffness parameters (derived via ultrasound echo tracking) and the presence of carotid plaques in Australian rural adults. In cross-sectional analyses, we assessed forty-six subjec...

Association of vascular and degenerative brain pathologies and past medical history from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center Database
We examined the following PMH: transient ischemic attack (TIA), stroke, traumatic brain injury, seizures, hypertension, cardiovascular events, hypercholesterolemia, B12 deficiency, diabetes mellitus, and thyroid disease. We dichotomized the following neuropathologies: atherosclerosis, arteriolosclerosis, cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), Alzheimer disease neuropathology (ADNP), Lewy bodies (LB), hippocampal sclerosis, frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), and TAR DNA-binding protein-43 (TDP-43). Separate logistic regression models assessed the relationship between the outcome of individual neuropathologies and all PMH...

Association of abnormal p-wave parameters with brain mri morphology: the atherosclerosis risk in communities neurocognitive study (ARIC-NCS)
CONCLUSION: In this exploratory analysis of a US community-based cohort, ECG surrogates of atrial myopathy are associated with higher prevalence of brain infarcts and microhemorrhage, suggesting subclinical vascular brain injury as a possible mechanism underlying the association of atrial myopathy with dementia. Pathophysiology, cellular and molecular mechanisms of large and small vessel diseases
Neurochem Int. 2023 Feb 4:105499. doi: 10.1016/j.neuint.2023.105499. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCerebrovascular disease (CVD) is the second most common cause of cognitive impairment and dementia in aged population. CVD presents in a myriad number of clinical ways based on the functional location of pathology. While primary clinical emphasis has been placed on motor, speech and visual deficits, vascular cognitive decline is a vastly under recognized and devastating condition afflicting millions of Americans. CVD, a disease of the blood vessels that supply blood to brain involves an integration between small and large ves...

Net benefit of diagnostic tests for multistate diseases: an indicator variables approach
J Biopharm Stat. 2023 Jan 29:1-28. doi: 10.1080/10543406.2023.2169928. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA limitation of the common measures of diagnostic test performance, such as sensitivity and specificity, is that they do not consider the relative importance of false negative and false positive test results, which are likely to have different clinical consequences. Therefore, the use of classification or prediction measures alone to compare diagnostic tests or biomarkers can be inconclusive for clinicians. Comparing tests on net benefit can be more conclusive because clinical consequences of misdiagnoses are considered. Th...
