Does arterial cannulation site for aortic dissection repair impact surgical outcomes?
CONCLUSIONS: This study found no statistically significant different in rates of stroke or other complications based on cannulation site. Femoral arterial cannulation thus remains a safe and efficient choice for arterial cannulation in the repair of acute type A aortic dissection.PMID:37065559 | PMC:PMC10089872 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-22-576

A prospective study of estimated glomerular filtration rate and outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation: The Loire Valley Atrial Fibrillation Project.
CONCLUSION Incidence rates of IS/TE, mortality and bleeding increased with reducing eGFR, across the whole range of renal function. OAC use was associated with a lower incidence of IS/TE and mortality at 1 year, compared with non-anticoagulated individuals in all categories of renal function as measured by eGFR. The NCB balancing IS against serious bleeding was positive, in favour of OAC use amongst patients with renal impairment. PMID: 24356875 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effect of active smoking on comparative efficacy of antithrombotic therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation: The Loire Valley Atrial Fibrillation Project.
Conclusion: In AF, there was a higher risk of severe bleeding in smokers, mainly in those treated with VKA. PMID: 25812113 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Variation in Warfarin Use at Hospital Discharge After Isolated Bioprosthetic Mitral Valve Replacement - An Analysis of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database.
CONCLUSIONS: Although patient characteristics and post-operative events may be associated with the prescription of warfarin following BMVR, substantial surgeon and hospital variability remains. This variability largely ignores the established practice guidelines, and warrants further study to define the optimal anticoagulation strategy in BMVR patients. Safety and feasibility of PCI in patients undergoing TAVR: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Publication date: Available online 11 January 2017 Source:Heart & Lung: The Journal of Acute and Critical Care Author(s): Anurag Bajaj, Samir Pancholy, Arjinder Sethi, Parul Rathor We aimed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) for coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) by performing a meta-analysis. A systemic search of the database was performed. Studies were included comparing TAVR versus TAVR with PCI for significant CAD in patients undergoing TAVR for severe aortic stenosis. The primary outcome was 30 day ...

Effectiveness and Safety of Non-Vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants in Atrial Fibrillation Patients with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: A Nationwide Cohort Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Compared with warfarin, patients with HCM and AF on NOACs had similar stroke and major bleeding risks, but lower all-cause mortality and composite fatal cardiovascular events. Our data suggest that patients with HCM and AF can be safely and effectively treated with NOACs. PMID: 30472021 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Single or dual antiplatelet therapy after transcatheter aortic valve replacement: an updated systemic review and meta-analysis.
Conclusions: This meta-analysis suggests that compared with DAPT, SAPT after TAVR is more likely to lead to a decline of 30-day mortality along with the reduced risk of bleeding and no increased risk of stroke. However, more clinical data and evidence from randomized controlled trials are warranted to clarify the optimal post-TAVR antiplatelet strategy. PMID: 31019786 [PubMed]

Effectiveness and Safety of Four Direct Oral Anticoagulants in Asians with Non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: In the largest real-world practice study among Asians with NVAF, four DOACs were associated with lower risks of thromboembolism and bleeding than warfarin. There was consistency even amongst high risk subgroups and whether standard dose or low dose regimes were compared. PMID: 31103697 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
