Feasibility and Outcomes of TAVI using the Left Axillary Artery as Primary Access Site.
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study reporting on outcome after TAVI using the LAA as default access. We conclude that it is highly feasible and safe with low rates of major vascular complications, bleeding and stroke. PMID: 30292844 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Factors Associated with Prolonged Survival in Left Ventricular Assist Device Recipients.
CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative diabetes and amiodarone use were associated with poor long-term survival in LVAD recipients. Development of early complications of stroke, gastrointestinal bleeding, hemolysis, or pump thrombosis was also associated with poor long-term survival. Early diagnosis and treatment of these complications may improve survival in LVAD recipients. PMID: 30316851 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Continuous-Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device Survival Improves with Multidisciplinary Approach.
CONCLUSIONS: Implementing a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach substantially improved outcomes for CF-LVAD recipients. PMID: 30853587 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Long-term outcomes with mechanical versus biological aortic valve prosthesis in patients > 70 years.
CONCLUSIONS: Mechanical aortic valve prosthesis is associated with worse long-term survival and increased bleeding after SAVR in patients aged >70 years. Our results suggest caution when considering mechanical aortic valve prostheses in elderly patients. PMID: 31082357 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Direct Cannulation in Minimally Invasive Cardiac surgery with limited resources.
CONCLUSIONS: In our experience, this approach is a reliable platform for a variety of MICS procedures and has resulted in low complication rates. The technique can be applied safely to both paediatric and adult population. Also, it is very cost effective as regular instruments and cannulas are used. Routine Stent-Bridging to the Supraaortic Vessels in Aortic Arch Replacement - 10 year-experience
CONCLUSIONS: SAVSTEB is a comparatively simple, safe and efficacious technique to create the anastomosis between tetrabranched arch grafts and the supra-aortic arteries in the short and intermediate term. Bleeding from the anastomoses, kinking and scar associated stenosis are negligible; however, vertebral overstenting remains a critical technical issue.PMID:34186091 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.05.074

Advancing Quality Metrics for Durable Left Ventricular Assist Device Implant: Analysis of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons' Intermacs Database
CONCLUSIONS: This study is among the first to report substantial interhospital variability in performance for hospitals implanting durable LVADs. These findings support the need to: (1) report hospital-level performance (mortality, composite); and (2) undertake benchmarking activities to reduce unwarranted variability in outcomes.PMID:35176258 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2022.01.031

Endoscopic vs Open Vein Harvest in Drug-Eluting Stents or Bypass Surgery for Left Main Disease Trial
CONCLUSIONS: Ischemia-driven revascularization at 5 years was higher in the EVH group. EVH and OVH patients had similar rates of graft stenosis or occlusion, and composite of death, stroke, or MI at 5 years.PMID:35283098 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.12.079

Sixth Annual Pediatric Interagency Registry for Mechanical Circulatory Support (Pedimacs) Report
CONCLUSIONS: This Sixth Pedimacs Report demonstrates the continued evolution of the pediatric field. The complexity of cardiac physiologies and anatomical constraint mandates the need for multiple types of devices utilized (PC, PP, IC). Detailed analyses of each device type in this report provide valuable information to further advance the care of this challenging and vulnerable population.PMID:36402175 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2022.10.042

Outcome of Pericardiectomy for Constrictive Pericarditis in Japan: A Nationwide Outcome Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Pericardiectomy is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Careful consideration should be given to these risk factors in the process of patient selection and perioperative management. PMID: 23791164 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery: Influence of Aortic Clamping Technique on Early Outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS: Minimally invasive mitral valve surgery can be performed successfully using either the endoaortic balloon technique or the transthoracic clamp approach. However, the transthoracic technique results in shorter operation time, less perioperative bleeding and better myocardial protection. PMID: 24035304 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Morbidity But Not Mortality Is Decreased After Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Off-pump CABG was associated with less morbidity, shorter length of stay, and similar mortality compared with on-pump procedures, suggesting that it can be a safe and effective alternative to standard on-pump CABG. However, the limited use of off-pump CABG in this multicenter analysis may restrict the generalizability of these results, and realistically defines the limited degree of acceptance of this technique in a real-world environment.
