Carbon Monoxide Protects Neural Stem Cells Against Iron Overload by Modulating the Crosstalk Between Nrf2 and NF- κB Signaling
Neurochem Res. 2022 Mar 8. doi: 10.1007/s11064-022-03537-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough accumulating evidences have demonstrated pro-survival effects of CO against various insults, the precise mechanism explaining how neural stem cells (NSCs) are protected by CO also remains largely unknown. Here we report CO pro-survival effect on NSCs against iron overload was comparable to that obtained with pharmacological inhibitors of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Its pro-survival effect was accompanied by the inhibition of ROS and subsequent inhibition of NF-κB which is mediated through nuclear factor erythroid 2-relate...

Pretreatment of Mouse Neural Stem Cells with Carbon Monoxide-Releasing Molecule-2 Interferes with NF-κB p65 Signaling and Suppresses Iron Overload-Induced Apoptosis.
Abstract Neural stem cell (NSC) transplantation is a promising approach to repair the damaged brain after hemorrhagic stroke; however, it is largely limited by the poor survival of donor cells. Breakdown products of the hematoma and subsequent iron overload contribute to the impairment of survival of neural cells. There is little information regarding the mechanism involved in the death of grafted cells. Furthermore, therapeutic research targeted to improving the survival of grafted neural stem cells (NSCs) is strikingly lacking. Here, we showed that iron overload induced apoptosis of C17.2 cells, a cell line orig...

Using Drug-Intoxicated Deaths as Potential Organ Donors: Impression of Attendees at the American College of Medical Toxicology 2014 Annual Scientific Meeting.
CONCLUSIONS: Medical toxicologists have some reservation in recommending solid organs for transplantation from deaths from cocaine and carbon monoxide. Given the decrease in potential organ donors from typical methods of death, further work is needed to promote organ donation in deaths related to acute poisoning.
