Geographical Distribution of Colorectal Cancer in Southwestern Iran Between Years 2011 and 2019
CONCLUSION: The cumulative incidence of colorectal cancer is relatively high in Khuzestan province. The cumulative incidence of the disease was higher in the central regions of the province than in other regions. Also, based on geographical areas, the cumulative incidence of the disease was higher in areas with arid climates, the average rainfall was 100-200 mm, and in areas with agricultural land use.PMID:37681264 | DOI:10.5152/tjg.2023.22666

A novel missense variant in < em > EIF2B5 < /em > identified in a consanguineous Iranian family with vanishing white matter disease and a brief review of the literature
J Genet. 2023;102:39.ABSTRACTVanishing of white matter (VWM) is a hereditary heterogeneous brain disorder that most often affects children. However, the onset of the disease varies from childhood to adulthood. VWM is caused by mutations in one of the five genes encoding subunits of the eukaryotic initiation factor eIF2B. In the current study, we aimed to determine the genetic cause of VWM in a large consanguineous Iranian family with three affected members. Next-generation sequencing was conducted on the proband to determine the underlying cause of VWM. The identified variant was validated by PCR-Sanger sequencing in the p...

< em > Penicillium rhizophilum < /em > , a novel species in the section < em > Exilicaulis < /em > isolated from the rhizosphere of sugarcane in Southwest Iran
Int J Syst Evol Microbiol. 2023 Sep;73(9). doi: 10.1099/ijsem.0.006028.ABSTRACTDuring a survey of species diversity of Penicillium and Talaromyces in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) rhizosphere in the Khuzestan province of Iran [1], 195 strains were examined, from which 187 belonged to Penicillium (11 species) and eight to Talaromyces (one species). In the present study, three strains of Penicillium belonging to section Exilicaulis series Restricta, identified as P. restrictum by Ansari et al. [1], were subjected to a phylogenetic study. The multilocus phylogeny of partial β-tubulin, calmodulin and RNA polymerase II sec...

Incidence and root causes of surgery cancellations at an academic medical center in Iran: a retrospective cohort study on 29,978 elective surgical cases
CONCLUSIONS: According to this study, patients' unsuitability for surgery, non-compliance with instructions, lack of time, and problems with equipment/supplies are the main reasons for canceling surgery. Proper preoperative assessment and preparation of patients and improved communication between medical teams and patients reduce the cancellation of booked surgeries.PMID:37674216 | PMC:PMC10481593 | DOI:10.1186/s13037-023-00377-6
