COMMD5 is involved in the mechanisms of hypotension after parathyroidectomy in patients receiving hemodialysis
CONCLUSIONS: Serum COMMD5 levels were increased after PTx in SHPT patients. COMMD5 promoted high expression of ANP and eNOS in endothelial cells, leading to vasodilation and resulting in hypotension.PMID:36804542 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejphar.2023.175596

Co-culture of human fibroblasts, smooth muscle and endothelial cells promotes osteopontin induction in hypoxia.
This study aimed to determine if osteopontin (OPN) was induced in hypoxia and if OPN could be responsible for driving AVF failure. Identification of new factors that participate in remodelling of AVFs is a challenge. Three cell lines representing the cells of the three layers of the walls of arteries and veins, fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells, were tested in mono- and co-culture in vitro for OPN expression and secretion in normoxia compared to hypoxia after silencing the hypoxia-inducible factors (HIF-1α, HIF-2α and HIF-1/2α) with siRNA or after treatment with an inhibitor of NF-kB. None of the ce...

First identification of PODXL nonsense mutations in autosomal dominant focal segmental glomerulosclerosis
In this study, we report the identification of a heterozygous nonsense PODXL mutations (Arg326X) in a Chinese pedigree featured by proteinuria and renal insufficiency with AD inheritance by whole exome sequencing (WES). Total mRNA and PODXL protein abundance were decreased in available peripheral blood cell samples of two affected patients undergoing hemodialysis, compared to those in healthy controls and hemodialysis controls without PODXL mutation. We identified another novel PODXL heterozygous nonsense mutation (c.C1133G; p.Ser378X) in a British-Indian pedigree of AD-FSGS by WES. In vitro study showed that, human embryo...

Chemical Engineering in the "BIO" world.
Abstract Modern Chemical Engineering was born around the end of the 19th century in Great Britain, Germany, and the USA, the most industrialized countries at that time. Milton C. Whitaker, in 1914, affirmed that the difference between Chemistry and Chemical Engineering lies in the capability of chemical engineers to transfer laboratory findings to the industrial level. Since then, Chemical Engineering underwent huge transformations determining the detachment from the original Chemistry nest. The beginning of the sixties of the 20th century saw the development of a new branch of Chemical Engineering baptized Biomed...
