Unequal Treatment: Physical Therapy Utilization in Rheumatoid Arthritis
J Rheumatol. 2023 Sep 15:jrheum.2023-0814. doi: 10.3899/jrheum.2023-0814. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 2022 guidelines for nonpharmacologic management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) include a conditional recommendation for physical therapy (PT).1 Known disparities by socioeconomic status (SES) and race and ethnicity in RA prevalence, patient-reported outcomes of function, disease activity, and access exist and persist over time.2,3.PMID:37714545 | DOI:10.3899/jrheum.2023-0814

Research Agenda for Physical Therapy from the American Physical Therapy Association
Phys Ther. 2023 Sep 15:pzad126. doi: 10.1093/ptj/pzad126. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTResearch agendas play an important role in directing scholarly inquiry in a field. The Research Agenda for Physical Therapy From the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) outlines research priorities that are vital to advancing physical therapist practice and the profession. The development of the research agenda included multiple iterative steps and feedback from stakeholders. A research agenda subgroup (n = 6) of the APTA Scientific Practice and Advisory Committee (SPAC), with APTA staff support, gathered information on existin...

From the Flight Deck to the Bedside: Core Aviation Concepts Applied to Acute Care Physical Therapist Practice and Education
Phys Ther. 2023 Sep 15:pzad125. doi: 10.1093/ptj/pzad125. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe health care industry has sought to reduce errors and patient harm by drawing upon human factors research developed largely in the aviation industry. However, literature that explicitly applies human factors concepts to physical therapist practice is scarce. Therefore, this clinical perspective highlights key concepts in aviation safety and training that should be considered for application to physical therapist education and practice in the acute care setting, including the law of primacy, pilot in command, crew resource management,...

Balance-Based Exercise Programs on Balance in Older Adults with Mild to Moderate Dementia: A Critically Appraised Topic
CONCLUSIONS: There is sufficient evidence to suggest that the use of physical therapy programs that include balance-based exercises, performed 1-2 times a week over the course of 12-25 weeks, improves balance in elderly adults with mild to moderate dementia.PMID:37709056 | DOI:10.1016/j.arr.2023.102073

Management of Chronic Postoperative Inguinal Pain
Surg Clin North Am. 2023 Oct;103(5):889-900. doi: 10.1016/j.suc.2023.04.003. Epub 2023 May 11.ABSTRACTChronic postoperative inguinal pain, CPIP, afflicts 10% to 15% of the nearly 700,000 Americans who have inguinal hernia surgery every year. CPIP is challenging to manage because it poses many diagnostic dilemmas that can be overcome with a thorough history, examination, differential diagnosis, and imaging. The initial treatment of CPIP should explore all nonsurgical therapies including medications, physical therapy, interventional pain management and cognitive therapy. When nonoperative methods fail, surgical interventions...

Musculoskeletal injury in an Australian professional ballet company, 2018-2021: 953 medical-attention and 706 time-loss injuries over 4 years
CONCLUSIONS: Almost all dancers required medical-attention for at least one injury during the surveillance period. Approximately 74% of injuries resulted in time-loss. BSI and ankle synovitis/impingement were of high burden and a high proportion of BSI were recurrent.PMID:37707788 | DOI:10.2519/jospt.2023.11858

Effectiveness Of Interventions Aimed At Changing Movement Patterns In People With Patellofemoral Pain: A Systematic Review With Network Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: Knee/hip exercises combined with internal feedback techniques may change knee and hip movements in people with PFP. The combination of these interventions can reduce frontal knee and hip movements, and can increase sagittal knee movements.PMID:37707784 | DOI:10.2519/jospt.2023.11956

Pros and cons of using artificial intelligence Chatbots for musculoskeletal rehabilitation management
J Orthop Sports Phys Ther. 2023 Sep 14:1-17. doi: 10.2519/jospt.2023.12000. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSynopsis: Artificial intelligence (AI), specifically Large Language Models (LLMs), which focus on the interaction between computers and human language, can influence musculoskeletal rehabilitation management. AI chatbots (e.g., ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing, Google Bard) are a form of LLMs designed to understand, interpret, and generate text similar to what is produced by humans. Since their release, chatbots have triggered controversy in the international scientific community, including when they have passed university exam...
