In the search for appropriateness in the cure of vaginitis: a model of anti-fungal stewardship?
Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci. 2022 Oct;26(20):7713-7718. doi: 10.26355/eurrev_202210_30048.ABSTRACTAntimicrobial resistance remains a worldwide issue with a major clinical and economic impact, leading to exceeding mortality, increased frequency of hospitalization and a great burden on the healthcare systems. Vulvovaginitis, especially when due to mixed infections, has emerged as a condition for which appropriate selection of antimicrobial therapy and proper antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) may contribute to minimizing the resistance development. This review discusses the appropriateness of selecting treatment for vul...

Diuretics for transient tachypnoea of the newborn.
CONCLUSIONS: Diuretics cannot be recommended as treatment for transient tachypnoea of the newborn and it should not be used unless additional data become available. This finding suggests that either furosemide is not effective in promoting resorption of lung fluid, or factors other than delayed resorption of this fluid contribute to the pathogenesis of transient tachypnoea of the newborn. The question remains as to whether furosemide given to the infant (or even to the mother before caesarean section) might shorten the duration of the illness. As elective caesarean section continues at a high level, these two interventions...

Search for Novel Antibacterial Compounds and Targets.
Abstract  Drug-resistant bacteria including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) have been spreading; however, the development of new antibacterial drugs has not progressed accordingly. Novel antibacterial drugs or their candidate seeds need to be developed for effective antibiotic therapy. Under these conditions, the search for novel compounds and novel targets is important. In Okayama University, as a part of the Drug Discovery for Intractable Infectious Diseases project, we are proceeding with the development...

The search for aliens within us: a review of evidence and theory regarding the foetal microbiome
Crit Rev Microbiol. 2021 Nov 17:1-13. doi: 10.1080/1040841X.2021.1999903. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe microbiome is believed to be established during the birthing process through exposure to the maternal microbiome and immediate external environment. The absence of a microbiome prior to birth is based on the sterile womb hypothesis, which was formulated at the beginning of the 20th century and is supported primarily by the culture-based approach in microbiological studies.Findings of bacterial presence in products of fertilization such as the placenta, amniotic fluid, foetal membranes, and umbilical cord blood in stu...
