HAX-1 inhibits apoptosis in prostate cancer through the suppression of caspase-9 activation.
Authors: Yan J, Ma C, Cheng J, Li Z, Liu C Abstract HS1 associated protein X-1 (HAX-1), a substrate of Src family tyrosine kinases, plays a critical role in cell apoptosis. However, its functions in prostate cancer remains unclear. The present study explored the role and mechanism of HAX-1 in cancer cell apoptosis. The mRNA and protein levels of HAX-1 in the prostate cancer cell lines PC-3, VCaP and DU145 were assessed. Cell proliferation, apoptosis and caspase-9 activities were assessed in DU145 after HAX-1 siRNA treatment. The mRNA and protein levels of HAX-1 in prostate cancer cell lines PC-3, VCaP and DU145 wer...

Job Searching: More than a Flawless Cover Letter
The alarm shrieks. 10:03 a.m. Welcome to your personal Groundhog Day. You wince — another fruitless day of job searching commences. Unemployment, or underemployment, bruises. We shuffle from one employment fair to another. We spend hours fine-tuning a cover letter only to receive a curt response from an employer. “The selection pool was very competitive. We have opted for another candidate. Best of luck in your job search.” You sigh, crumpling the letter and flicking it to the wastepaper basket. Lamenting the depressing job search, you question your employability. “Maybe there is something wrong with me,” yo...

FDA Building a Prescription Drug and Marketing Database
Over the last several years, we have written extensively about the potential implications that the Physician Payments Sunshine Act will have on physicians and the life sciences industry. One of the greatest implications is that numerous government and private entities will be able to use the publicly posted payment data to "data mine" for certain trends and information to identify potentially fraudulent behavior or medically unnecessary services. Living up to our predictions, although somewhat indirectly related to the Sunshine Act, the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Office of Criminal Investigations (OCI) recentl...

Self determination theory and employed job search
Publication date: October 2014 Source:Journal of Economic Psychology, Volume 44 Author(s): Riccardo Welters , William Mitchell , Joan Muysken Self Determination Theory (SDT) predicts that employees who use controlled motivation to search for alternate (better) work are less successful than their counterparts who use autonomous motivation. Using Australian labour market data, we find strong support for SDT. We find that workers who face externally regulated pressures (pressure arising from involuntary part-time or casual labour contracts) to search for alternate employment are less likely to find better work, than workers...

Next Steps: Job Search and Career Choices 101
Abstract: After years of medical training, trainees entering the workforce often feel ill prepared to embark upon the job search process and know little about the art of contract negotiations. Jackson & Coker, an Atlanta-based healthcare recruiting firm representing clients throughout the U.S., found that over half of 500 physicians in their study left their first job after five years, and more than half of those stayed only one or two years. This session will provide an outline of how to navigate the job search and interview process and include advice on how to determine career paths within and outside of academic institutions.

Strategies for job search
I have been reading on this forum some people giving out bad job search advice, and I want to use my own example to illustrate why they are bad advice: 1. You can wait until later in the year because there will be less competition. While you might think that your odds of landing a better job improves as your PGY5 years goes on because most of the graduates have signed contracts hence less competition, this was absolutely not true in my case. I was stupid enough to decline job offers in the... Strategies for job search
