Association of rhinosinusitis with nasopharyngeal carcinoma: A population‐based study
ConclusionsThis study detected an association between NPC and rhinosinusitis. We recommend that patients who are diagnosed with rhinosinusitis, either acute or chronic, seek out aggressive management to reduce the tissue burden and lower the risk of subsequently developing NPC. The relationship between hypotension, cerebral flow, and the surgical field during endoscopic sinus surgery
ConclusionsHypotensive anesthesia is an effective method of controlling intraoperative bleeding during endoscopic sinus surgery; however the effect is clinically small in low MAP ranges. In otherwise healthy patients undergoing ESS with general anesthesia, reducing MAP to below 60 mm Hg may increase the risk of cerebral ischemia. Level of Evidence2b Laryngoscope, 2014

Modification of the lund‐kennedy endoscopic scoring system improves its reliability and correlation with patient‐reported outcome measures
ConclusionsModification of the LK system by excluding the subscores of scarring and crusting improves its reliability and its correlation with PROMs. In addition, the MLK system retains the familiarity of the widely used LK system and is applicable to any patient irrespective of surgical status. The MLK system may be a more suitable and reliable endoscopic scoring system for clinical practice and outcomes research. Level of Evidence4 Laryngoscope, 2014

The impact of comorbid migraine on quality‐of‐life outcomes after endoscopic sinus surgery
ConclusionPatients with comorbid migraine and CRS are more likely to have less severe evidence of disease and worse preoperative baseline QOL scores. This may imply that comorbid migraine disorder, in the setting of CRS, compels these patients to seek surgical management earlier in the disease process. Regardless, ESS provides comparable improvement for both patients with and without comorbid migraine. Level of Evidence2c. Laryngoscope, 2014

Informed consent when prescribing medication: A randomized controlled trial
ConclusionsPatients in general did not remember discussing adverse prednisone risks with their physician even a short time after the discussion took place. Although the patient handout resulted in improved recall of risks following the prescription of prednisone, its importance in the informed medication consent process remains an open question. Role of hypoxia‐inducible factor‐1α expression in regulatory T cells on nasal polypogenesis
ConclusionsHIF‐1α–induced RORC expression in Tregs may play a key role in the pathogenesis of nasal polyps. Level of EvidenceNA Laryngoscope, 2013

How to resolve the caudal septal deviation?: Clinical outcomes after septoplasty with bony batten grafting
ConclusionsEndonasal septoplasty using bony batten grafting for caudal septal deviation resulted in an improvement of nasal obstruction symptoms and acoustic rhinometry components. Level of Evidence3b Laryngoscope, 2013

Analysis of comorbidities and objective parameters in refractory chronic rhinosinusitis
ConclusionsThe current analysis constructed the clinical profile of the recalcitrant CRS patient undergoing revision sinus surgery. In general, this patient group has a high prevalence of polyposis, asthma, inhalant allergy, ASA sensitivity, and elevated disease burden as measured by objective measures. The polyp phenotype signifies statistically higher prevalence of associated comorbidities and greater objective disease severity. The presence of asthma, inhalant allergy, and ASA sensitivity also predicts statistically higher disease burden. The endoscopy and CT scores statistically correlate with the number of previous su...

Frontal sinus drillout (modified Lothrop procedure): Long‐term results in 204 patients
ConclusionFor the majority of patients who undergo frontal sinus drillout, patency of the frontal sinus outflow tract appears to be maintained for more than a decade; nevertheless, almost one‐third of patients who undergo this procedure will ultimately require additional frontal sinus surgery. Correlation between bacterial biofilms and osteitis in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis
ConclusionA total of 84.8% of the bone underlying mucosa with BBF had some form of osteitis in ethmoid sinus, and approximately 46.4% of CRS patients were from a subgroup with both BBF and osteitis. The volume of BBF correlated well with severity of osteitis in CRS patients. Level of Evidence3b. Laryngoscope, 2013

Central skull base osteomyelitis
ConclusionsOsteomyelitis of the central skull base poses significant challenges for timely and accurate diagnosis. Aggressive management with antimicrobials, coupled with surgical debridement in select cases, may avoid serious neurologic morbidity and mortality. Level of EvidenceNA Laryngoscope, 2013

Antisomnogenic cytokines, quality of life, and chronic rhinosinusitis: A pilot study
ConclusionsPatients with CRS exhibited behavioral changes commonly referred to as sickness behavior, which include poor sleep quality and reduced QOL. The upregulation of IL‐4 and TGF‐β may contribute to inflammatory brain‐mediated effects on sleep quality, whereas IL‐13 may be a pleiotropic signaling molecule influencing sleep, QOL, and CRS disease severity. Complications of primary and revision functional endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis
ConclusionThe rate of major complications (0.36%) associated with primary FESS is lower than earlier reports. The rate of major complications following revision FESS (0.46%) was found to be similar to primary cases. IGS, insurance status, age, and extent of surgery were found to be associated with an increased risk of major complications following FESS. Level of Evidence2C. Laryngoscope, 2013
