Less underestimaton of excess weight by the categorical than the visual method. Its determinants and feeding practices in Mexican mothers of children aged 2 to 12 years
CONCLUSIONS: the categorical method was more accurate. Recognition of correct weight perception is one of the first actions required for controlling childhood overweight/obesity.PMID:37705462 | DOI:10.20960/nh.04596

Overweight and obesity in women participating in social feeding programs in Mexico: data from vulnerable population groups in the Mexican National Nutrition and Health Survey 2018
CONCLUSIONS: it is critical that the design of public policy and social feeding programs consider the scientific evidence generated through rich experiences in Mexico, such as the program of CCT Prospera. This will allow decision-makers to address the epidemiological health and nutrition problems impacting the Mexican population today.PMID:37705439 | DOI:10.20960/nh.04603

High TGM1 Allelic Heterogeneity causing Lamellar ichthyosis in a small geographic area in South Mexico: Another Example of the "R éunion Paradox"
Eur J Med Genet. 2023 Sep 12:104842. doi: 10.1016/j.ejmg.2023.104842. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLamellar ichthyosis (LI) is an autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis characterized by generalized dry skin and severe scaling. It is caused by biallelic mutations in the TGM1 gene, however molecular data from non-Caucasian populations are limited. Results of genetic-molecular analysis of a group of LI pedigrees originating from two close small populations from south Mexico are presented. LI affected individuals belonging to 9 apparently unrelated families were studied. Exome sequencing or Sanger sequencing in probands fr...

Pilot Monitoring of Lead in Umbilical Cord Blood of Newborns Associated With the Use of Glazed Ceramics from Guanajuato, Mexico
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.1007/s12011-023-03843-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe use of lead-glazed pottery for cooking and storing food, a widespread practice in Mexico, represents a risk of exposure to lead from the human intrauterine stage. Therefore, a pilot study was carried out by means of the measurement of lead in umbilical cord blood by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) including 69 newborns from the Mexican state capital of Guanajuato, Guanajuato City, where the use of glazed clay is still widespread. Lifestyle and sociodemographic data were collected by interviewing the pa...

The Heritability of Psychopathology Symptoms in Early Adolescence: Moderation by Family Cultural Values in the ABCD Study
This study examined phenotypic associations between parent- and youth-reported family cultural values in late childhood on youth internalizing and externalizing symptoms in early adolescence, and whether family cultural values moderated genetic and environmental influences on psychopathology symptoms. The sample comprised 10,335 children (Mage=12.89 years; 47.9% female; 20.3% Hispanic/Latino/a, 15.0% Black, 2.1% Asian, 10.5% other) and their parents from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, and biometric models were conducted in the twin subsample (n = 1,042 twin pairs; 43.3% monozygotic). Parents and y...

Detection and mapping of the seasonal distribution of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and valorization as a biosorbent of Pb(II) in water
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29780-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the present research, the presence of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) on the surface of the San Jose Dam located in the city of San Luis Potosi, S.L.P, Mexico, was monitored and mapped. The monitoring was conducted for 2 years (2018-2020) with remote sensing data from OLI Landsat 8 sensors, based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The results demonstrated the capability and accuracy of this method, where it was observed that the aboveground cover area, proliferation, and distribution of water ...

Preabortion ultrasound - a patient perspective
CONCLUSION: Most women opting for medical abortion through telemedicine did not undergo a pre-abortion ultrasound scan. The main reason stated was that women did not find it necessary, lack of resources and privacy issues.PMID:37698511 | DOI:10.1080/13625187.2023.2249158
